It's been a while since I posted because of a problem or a question i think, so here goes.
I've got problems with my rig. It's a hardware fault, and I'm in the process of eliminating the cause. The symptoms have been reboot loops, gpu failure on boot meaning nothing to display on screen, tv tuner and other pci cards not being recognised. etc, etc.
I've tried a new tv tuner, no joy. I just got a new PSU and am trying that one in the rig tonight, however I'm also thinking about doing a software rebuild when i figure out the hardware problem.
Now, I have vista premium and vista ultimate. Ultimate isn't installed on anything so its available for use. Premium has been my VMC OS since it was released.
Are there any benefits to going with Ultimate over Premium. Off the top of my head the only thing I can think of is native remote desktop support in ultimate. Can anyone offer advice on whether there's any point going to Ultimate instead of Premium?
If you have been having issues with pretty much all of your cards it may very well be your motherboard. You can try updating the BIOS, or disabling all onboard items such as Network, Sound etc see if that makes a difference, but if its not recognising cards at all at times then i suspect its a hardware issues with the motherboard itself.
Premium or Ultimate?..... well if its being used for nothing more then a VMC then I doubt you'll notice much difference at all between the two. Perhaps do a search to see a complete list of differences between Vista versions.

thanks banshee, i'm on top of the hardware problems, just looking for advice on the OS itself, was only detailing the h/w issues so i can put things in context for you kind souls who are replying.
I'm thinking i might go with ultimate if for no other reason than its a full version, and premium is an upgrade, so it will save me having to install twice to get premium "clean" installed.

I would look into the possibility that you have a bad RAM stick, or one that needs reseated.

i dunno, i rebuilt it from the ground up and now (as was the case just before rebuilding) when i turn it on i get no image on the display at all...not even the post screen. tried two different graphics cards and two power supplies, both the same. only thing i haven't tried is another type of ram so i'll give that a go next...but i'm picking its the mb.
If you are getting no POST screen, are you getting any diagnostic beeps?
Or are you saying it passes POST but then does nothing?
Oz
i'm getting nothing on screen whatsoever, the light on the monitor doesn't even change to recognise a signal going into it. there's no beeps or anything.
A little trick that has worked for me in the past (but not always) is to simply unplug the power cable connected to the motherboard. Wait about 30 seconds then plug it back in. Sounds silly but none the less it has worked from time to time.

that was done when i rebuilt the pc from the ground up. ta though.
Worth trying again but i still think its you should replace the motherboard. Sounds like you've tried everything else, and its not uncommon for motherboard to play silly buggers.
