1080p playback

Hello all,

I have recently purchased a nice new 42" Bravia LCD and with it has come the desire to get my hands on lots of HD content.

Playback of 720p content runs fine on my system(at least after some tweaking and memory/processor upgrades) but 1080p content tends to have audio that is way out of sync, an issue that I also had with 720p before upgrading the hardware a little.

I suspect the problem is with the system specs not being up to scratch but wanted to be sure that there is nothing else I can do to get playback working properly. Specs are below

Abit F-I90HD
C2D E4300 running at 2.4Ghz
2Gb PC-667 Kingston(256Mb used for shared graphics)
Digital-now Dual Hybrid PCIe
stock cooling
Antec NSK2400 case

Also, if my system isnt grunty enough to run 1080p can anyone recommend a converter for downscaling a matroska file down to 720p? This wouldn't be a big deal for me since it is only a true 720p panel anyway.

Re: 1080p playback

Hi,

I have Vista running well on a 2.66ghz.

Super converter can do a lot. Just make sure you try several decoders to do the conversion.

SUPER: Free video converter for Windows, what a beauty!!!

Re: 1080p playback

I have tested one 1080P file (Terminator 3) on my HTPC and it works fine.

That is with an Athlon 64 X2 with XPMCE (3800+ 2GHz).

So it should work with your setup. What codecs are you using? What player (MCE, VMC, WMP?)

Using Avivo for video, mce for audio. Although the matroska files use haali media splitter and one or two other special codecs I believe.

What format is the file you are playing in, or are you playing direct from bluray/hd-dvd?

Have you got latest drivers for MoBo and on board sound and grafix? I would start there as Drivers often vastly increase performance, RAM and CPU should be fine for 1080p. As far as converters go VideoReDo or a search on google will get you sorted...like others said try a few. Autogk is good for AVIs. old but good.

Re: 1080p playback

drivers are all the latest, HDTV channels are fine, 720p movies are fine, its just 1080p .mkv files i have an issue with.

I believe .mkv or matroska is just used as a container for the TS files from the original blu ray or hd dvd but I really dont know if any extra processing is involved to playback this file type.

Is the radeon X1250 onboard graphics beefy enough do you tihnk?

maybe not...can you check it's specs on the net? I really have not run any 1080p content so I am out of ideas and the like now. Keep up the research and maybe someone can point in the right direction. Specs of card would be a good start.

One thing you haven't mentioned is what software you're using to play back the files?

I suspect your system is a bit light-on for this usage, particularly the graphics, and I also would never overclock and MCE box, I've seen it cause too many compatibilty issues with hardware.

I suspect my system isnt quite up to it as well which is why I am more interested in software to downscale the .mkv file to 720p instead.

I have mentioned the software but I will mention again.

I am running media centre, the .mkv file is being split using haali media splitter and after that FFDshow would be taking over, or possibly avivo codec. It is hard to tell with an .mkv file which codecs it uses.

Re: 1080p playback

I use the Haalli Media splitter and ffdshow and play the content using MCE.

I have only tested one 1080P movie (T3) but it played fine.

Re: 1080p playback

I take it you are trying to play back HD DVD and/or Bluray rips that are in a matroska container...

You should get rid of that avivo crap and install CoreAVC or FFDShow.
CoreAVC is geared towards slower pc's, you should be fine using fdshow (which has a slightly better pq, but doesn't use both cpu cores). Also install AC3Filter for the audio.

I have a question and it may be a dumb one: (wears flame proof outfit)

You mention that you want to play 1080p content and then the last line mentions that the panel is only a 720p spec display!

My question is: Is your Bravia an X or W series model????

Re: 1080p playback

And when did they start making 42" models

Anyway, my Bravia is only a 1366x768 screen but it reports its native resolution as 1920x1080 over HDMI.

I don't think it really matters what the TV accepts, because the source is 1080p so the PC has to do the processing on it anyway. It would then be scaled back by the TV or the PC before displaying but the processing still has to be done.

Well I for one thing PC scaling is far superior to display scaling so I think the best thing is to get display native or as close as possible with the PC, rather than feeding 1080p into a 720pish screen.

Also from my experience these "rips" are not 1080p, they are normally 960x540p?
