Guide: Beating CRC Errors when Ripping DVDs

Hey all this is my first guide so bear with me. There may be other ways around this but it has worked for me and hopefully it well help some in the future.

Since having now got Vista Media Center running pretty much as well as I want it I began to rip DVD's for a whole afternoon. I own all of the DVD's I am ripping which have been bought and still contain all their copy protection. So this guide is for users who are getting CRC Errors while ripping DVD's that still contain copy protection.

For this guide you will need to download and install a copy of:

DVD43: http://www.dvd43.com/
MagicISO: http://www.magiciso.com/download.htm
DVD Shrink: http://www.mrbass.org/dvdshrink/

For those who need it here is a quick summary of the programs above as well as CRC Errors:

A cyclic redundancy check (CRC) is a type of function that takes as input a data stream of unlimited length and produces as output a value of a certain fixed size. The term CRC is often used to denote either the function or the function's output. A CRC can be used in the same way as a checksum to detect accidental alteration of data during transmission or storage. (Source: Wikipedia) - In short this means your DVD Burner Software has detected faults in your data and assumes that the data is no longer watchable. Many argue this case saying that if a few bits of data were to be corrupt it wouldn't much change the quality of the DVD.

I think my DVD Rom is dieing which is why this is occurring as the laser is weak, however scratched DVD's will also cause this problem during the ripping process.

As such my tutorial begins.

1) Download and Install DVD43 - This program simply removes copy protection from a disk when it is inserted into a DVD Drive. I will go into depth more later why we will need this but for now install it following the prompts and restart your PC.

2) Download and Install MagicISO or any other ISO program that you use as your proffered software.

3) Insert the DVD you wish to rip.

4) This is where DVD43 comes in. Down the bottom after you had restarted your PC you will notice that a yellow face appears in the task bar (green if the DVD is already in the drive). This face tells you that DVD43 is running. If your DVD is in the drive the face will be green which means it has recognized the disk and removed all forms of copy protection.

Why do this you may ask? What I found when using MagicISO to make an ISO of this disk was that upon opening my ripping program it found no traces of encryption on the ISO. Which theoretically makes sense because after all the ISO is only a container for the Data that we have placed inside it. Unfortunately though Video Encryption such as CSS still occurs in the vobs themselves. By using DVD43 it removes this CSS to ensure that our ISO is encryption free.

5) Open MagicISO or your proffered ISO software and make a DVD image of the disk in your drive (for further info on this please check your softwares help guides or FAQs).

6) Remove DVD from the drive after the ISO is completed.

7) Download and install DVD Shrink or your proffered ripping software.

8) (This is why I use DVD Shrink). Go to File -> Open Disk Image.

9) Select your desired Compression ratio (if you even want one) your auidio and subtitle tracks and begin to rip your vob files.

10) Your complete with a perfectly good DVD!.

11) The reason this works is because ISO programs don't perform CRC checks and because your source medium for ripping is off the HDD things like scratches or a weak laser can not effect the ripping process.

I've done this on 5 separate DVD's now with the same result so I am confident that this should work for everyone. I am also running Vista (hence it's in this forum) so I can also assure that all the programs and steps here will work on this operating system.

If anyone has any queries let me know but it's helped me a ton and saved me hiring the DVD's just to rip them even though I already own them.

Good luck.

(Any feedback on how good / bad this is would be appreciated so I could make a better one next time).

Re: Guide: Beating CRC Errors when Ripping DVDs

I'll add my 5c.

DVD43 is a great free solution for removing CSS protection from DVD's - which probably caused the CRC errors in the first place.
DVD43 has been abandoned however, and hasn't been updated in ages, many of the newer DVD protections schemes are not supported by DVD43 and you will run into the same old problem.
The only solution is to use something which is updated to circumvent the newer disc protection schemes. Some are
ANYDVD -> http://www.slysoft.com
DVD Region Free -> http://www.dvdidle.com/dvd-region-free.htm
and a less updated free version

Ahh I didn't know that the css may have been the issue thanks for that I may try them out..

I dont see why shrink would have thrown css errors though given its meant to decode it but bleh
