Isn't creating a sticky on this site = LEGEND!! Status? Have rated your downloads as excellent, just to make sure the registry entry places the keys required and sets the value correctly so no registry changes are required by those who are afraid of what they might do playing with the registry with a bottle of red in hand late at night! Me, I have fond memories of doing this very thing with Windows 2000 Server!!

G L E N

L E G E N ----D is no coincidence me thinks!! I love seeing the IceTV guide for the first time in Vista, knowing all those on the path before have now made sure (...to a point, it is microsoft you know...sorry mikehayton...) it is working correctly.

KUDOS and REPS to you. Now all is to do is write a review of this patch and a guide to installing it and I may obtain the coverted rep points one day and get off Level 1.

GUIDE TO ISTALLING KB935685.zip, KB938927.zip
Download, uncompress and double click if UAC asks tel it yes, your done!

REVIEW - Kicks Butt!! (I didn't even have to call Microsoft Support!) Especially when your Media Centre is called Media Center. Do not install on Media Centres named Media Centre or Ubuntu MythTV or that have PVR in their title!!

Wow - these how to articles are hard work, I'd like to thank Glen for obtaining these files and uploading for the community, hope it doesn't kill the server Mike!! Now to sit back and let the Reps roll in.

Re: Important Hotfixes For Vista Media Center

I have installed the patches but the EPG guide supplied by Microsoft failed. The postcode I typed was 2220. Do I need to use another EPG guide? If so, where can I get a free one?

Re: Important Hotfixes For Vista Media Center

There is no official EPG in Australia. Your choices are basically IceTV - about $99 per year but a reliable service, or something like FreeEPG, a free service run by enthusiasts. Search the forum and you'll get more info.

Re: Important Hotfixes For Vista Media Center

Just a word of caution in regards to installing KB935685 and KB938927. I installed these hotfixes BEFORE I installed the EPG. This caused me no end of problems.

Install the hotfixes AFTER you've installed the EPG!

What EPG solution were you using? I set a box up recently using IceTV and installed the hotfixes before IceTV without any issues.

Yes! I discovered this also after doing a clean install of Vista and thinking I was being pro-active and installing them striaght up.

Uninstalling the just the patches won't fix it either; you have the delete the reg entries also.

You will get an "application failure" "A critical media centre process has failed. Please reboot your machine and try again" message as soon as you try to use any part of MCE that try's to access the EPG system files. like running TV tuner or guide set up's.

No EPG had ever been installed before (fresh install), installed hotfixes but did not configure
TV settings (long story ... Vista x64 with RAID 5 every few days 1/2 drives failed, whole system re-install - known problem with Vista) as was doing basic soak testing.

Fixed the problems by uninstalling hotfixes and removing registry entries.

FYI: No-longer using RAID 5, system been running for over a week with no major problems

Re: Important Hotfixes For Vista Media Center

Has anyone else seen this?

If you uninstall KB935685 and keep the disableUpdateDiscSvc reg key then you'll get crashes. It sounds like the pre-KB935685 version of mcupdate.exe was being used for some reason - you rebooted right?

If someone can reproduce this problem, can they
  1. first reboot and confirm that the problem is still reproducable.
  2. try uninstalling the KB938927 registry key, reboot and confirm that the problem is still reproducable.
  3. try uninstalling the KB935685 registry key (namely the disableUpdateDiscSvc key), reboot and confirm that the problem is still reproducable.

Thanks

Mike

I did reboot (a number of times).

I didn't know which of the hotfix registry entries was causing the problem, so I just removed them all. I was getting a little frustrated with the whole media center thing at the
time

I don't know which version of mcupdate.exe was being used (Sorry).

I removed both updates and Reg keys at the same time and rebooted. So I cannot tell you which one of the the two was specifically causing the error.

I cannot now go back check which of the two caused the problem, as I have since removed them and setup up the guide/Tv and re-installed that updates (this time without any errors).....there is no going back reproducing it now, short of a clean install (I'm not that helpful - sorry )

I can tell you that I rebooted many (10+?) times trying to solve this issue, before attempting to remove the updates, even going so far as to remove (and uninstall) the TV tuner and replace it and install a totally different TV tuner, as I initally thought the tuner and/or it's driver was the cause of the problem.

The "only thing" done to the PC between reboots the time the error was solved; was remove these two patches and reg entries and reboot again. The problem was instantly fixed and I ran setup sucsessfully.

Hardware;
Core 2 Duo E6850
Asus P5K-Deluxe-WiFi (P35)
2 x 1gig OCZ DDR2-8500
XFX Geforce 8800GTX
Compro E700 Tuner
Avermedia A16A Tuner

Hope that helps.
