Just bought a 32" LCD and had it wired up and working fine using the VGA out from the card to the VGA in on the LCD. Everything worked fine.
I changed to the DVI output from the card, to the HDMI in on the LCD, using a DVI-HDMI cable today, and now Live TV and recorded tv has a stutter problem when playing. SD and HD exhibit the same problem.
If i have both outputs from the card enabled in clone mode, i can only select 1280x768 resolution, and there is no stutter on either output. If I disable the VGA out, using only the DVI out, I can use 1360x768 (native for the panel) and everything looks fantastic, except live and recorded TV stutters, like a stop-start jerk every 5 seconds or so, which is obviously no good.
There is no stutter when watching a DVD, or playing back downloaded divx/xvid type content. . only stutters on live or recorded tv. . .
There is some recorded tv on my sytem that I recorded a few days ago, while just using the VGA and the stuttering hadn't occured, which recorded and played back fine before, but now that recorded tv, when watching through the DVI out, stutters the same as live TV.
Does it sound like a problem with the codec that handles the TV?
I'm at a loss to figure it out any further, besides just going back to plain old VGA, which i don't really wanna do.
Hi and thanks for your reply!!
As for which decoder i'm using, i don't actually know lol. . I installed the vista codec pack, from here http://www.msfn.org/board/index.php?showtopic=66826 and all my media and everything works with that pack installed. . .
I ran the decoder checkup from the link you posted, and it shows 4 entries:
ffdshow video decoder
microsoft mpeg-2 video decoder
ffdshow raw video filter
CBVA DMO wrapper filter
not sure how i tell which one is actually in use or how to change it??
EDIT:Just thought I'd add, it's only live and recorded TV that has the stutter problem when using DVI, downloaded media and stuff still plays fine. So it's really only the live/recorded tv decoder, but I'm not sure whether that's seperate or uses the same as downloaded divx type media. ???

Reason: added more info
I might have to bow to the vista masters on here as I haven`t tinkered with it yet.
Under mce 2005 you can just put a tick on the decoder check up utility to say which is the preferred decoder.
Normally all you need is a decoder like the powerdvd and say ffdshow to handle your xvids etc. Any other codec packs ( especially things like the klite) can really mess up the system.
if you have a back up might be worth uninstalling the vista codec pack and then just installing say the powerdvd one and ffdshow seperately. Also make sure you have the latest vista drivers for your mobo and card ( if you can get them )
If it's a codec issue then wouldn't the stuttering occur over the VGA conection as well?
Yeah that's what i would have thought too, but it only happens when is use only the DVI. If i have them both on, in clone mode, it doesn't stutter. . but then i only get 1280x768 option. . when i disable the vga and use just the DVI, i get 1360x768, and the stutter starts. . but if i keep it at 1280x768 with DVI only, it still stutters!!!
Thanks for that link. I installed it this morning but still no improvement. TV has a stutter about every 5 seconds, when using the DVI out.
As for changing decoders etc I'm a bit out of my depth there, never had to deal with it. . .is there a utility to allow me to change the decoder used for TV?
DVD and downloaded video content still plays fine using either VGA or DVI.

Yes, there is. I have one here which I use occasionally, only to find that the default Microsoft decoder give me the best performance
I'm trying to find a link to it - can't for the life of me remember where I got it from
Some people seem to find PowerDVD performs well. My personal experience is that the default decoder is better (and I own PowerDVD Ultra!)
I've also tried the Nero decoder - urgh!
As Jaiidan suggested above, you can get a trial version of PowerDVD from the Cyberlink website and give it a try - no need to spend any money if it doesn't fix your problem
Unfortunately, I don't think it will, but it's definitely worth a try, you never know!
Also, as Jaaidan suggested, make sure you drivers are all up to date.
I use the Vista Codec pack without issues, but once again, make sure you have the latest version - it's now up to 4.8
Does the image stutter when running in a window rather than full-screen?
Hi, this may sound a bit left field but I experienced similar stuttering when I first installed Vista. I found the problem to be the Wireless network card drivers. When I updated these, the stuttering stopped. Some wireless cards aren't supported under Vista and can cause problems.
If you haven't got wireless lan it may still be worth checking your card manufacturer's web sites for reports of similar problems.

I tried the powerdvd7 decoders today.. no improvement, in fact it was worse, terribly sluggish even on the VGA connection. . so still no closer to a resolution
