February purchase - Vista or MCE?

By about February I figure I won't be able to hold back any further and will need to commit to a Media Centre PC.

I held off to let Core Duo 2's hit the marketplace, and I figure they are now fairly common place.

So now, with a February purchase date in mind, I have to start thinking - do I go with an immature Vista and have all the pains of immature drivers, or do I got with a known MCE solution - which may not be perfect, but at least seems to be workable?

I know I could do MCE now and upgrade to Vista by about June (4 months to get mature drivers?) - but that will cost me a fair bit of time as I do everything twice - let alone the cost price of 2 O/S's (vs 1) (NB - Is there any truth that MS have given free upgrades to Vista to recent MCE purchasers?).

So what would you do - go with the pain of a new Vista system, or go with a functional but not perfect MCE system?

MS are not giving away free upgrades, they are giving coupons though that will allow you to upgrade to vista when it is released, i think to upgrade to home premium is about $AU40.

Re: February purchase - Vista or MCE?

ajdisse,

I think it really depends what you want to get out of your media centre expereince. If you are after a solid workhorse, definately go XP now; if you are not a tinkerer and like to play outdoor sports, go XP now; if you have a facination with getting the latest / greatest, don't mind staying up until all hours with as yet barely seen issues, go Vista now.

Stuff like MCE will move fast in Vista, in fact it already is. There will be M$ updates that will break things you least expect, many years of M$ history tells us all to expect this.

I haven't got into the detail, but if you buy a machine now I'd be ensuring that you get a VIsta upgrade uncluded. Most major vendors will have this already. Just make sure the upgrade gives you the "right" version of Vista for you.

Personally my 2 MCE boxes are XP and will stay that way for a little while yet. They are devices used in the house. Just like I wouldn't tinker with a working fridge, I don't play with them! Once I get familiar with Vista in '07, I will make some time and eventually upgrade both boxes systematically. MCE2 was specd with Vista in mind over a 4 - 5 year useful life for many components.

Go Vista, it'll be fine for you. The only issues atm are driver issues, which will be solved VERY soon.
