I've decided to post a question or two in the actual forum. The social group is still alive and well here, and you should join if you want to support the effort (I want a lot of members in the group before we decide there is enough support to continue). Posting here allows everyone to see the sorts of questions and discussions more easily, as well as keeping it top of mind.
The campaign being thought about at present is to lobby the right people at a federal level to ensure that we, as members of the public, have what we want - freely available, reliable, 7 day in advance, unencumbered EPG data for FTA TV as part of the broadcasters licence terms.
At present I am trying to work out an easy way for people to find their local federal member's email and postal address.
Yes. People can use this link and locate their area.
Oz
Thanks Oz, I opened that one and then went back to the PDF and proceeded to complain about the PDF - I've been at this too long today! I suppose I could give people the choice, pdf or csv, its not too hard for them.
I was ideally trying to find something like the AEC search that resulted in the contact details for their local member. Perhaps in Australian politics the first test is to find the people you need to write / talk to, if you pass that then you've got sufficient IQ to continue

Unfortunately neither solution is foolproof since some suburbs cross electoral boundaries and that requires you to either view the electorate map or phone the number given. In the end I'm sure most here would manage.
And half the people don't even know what electorate they're in.
This is the list of Members in Australia by Electorate, so if you know what electorate you're in you're sweet.
So how can I help?
Do I go to my local MP? Can someone, really smart(unlike me) prepare some kind of statement, with legal references to US/EU laws and demand that the law should be changed in Australia?

We'll (the group) will be working up a proper strategy on how best to move forward.
I'm sure we'll draft some sort of letter that provides all those details. It'd be nice to get hold of some of those reporters (you know the ones who've sought quotes from the forums before) and see if they can help.
I'd like to see us not only approach the Politicians but get some press. Politicians respond better to press than individual voters.
Point of order... Who said it had to be a FREE EPG?
WE all did. Even if that means third party suppliers become a thing of the past. We'd rather respect the networks copyright BUT having an accurate and complete guide removes the need to breech said copyright. Using the data for its intended purpose in the form of the EIT is IN NO WAY breeching copyright.

Good point, let me clarify. The aim is to have freely available reliable EPG data for 7 days as part of the broadcast licence. That does not mean the EPG to the end user is free. People such as IceTV may still be required to compile and publish the data in a way that some users want.
What we don't want is some FTA TV broadcasters selectively releasing data, or providing crap free data. We want a level playing field as we move this country to DTV so that, we the public, have choice of device by us, not the FTA stations and their $ driven alliances with device manufacturers.
