Hi all,
Does anyone know how/if the below announcement will integrate into Vista MC?
MEDIA RELEASE 14 November 2007
FREE TV NETWORKS TO BROADCAST INDUSTRY ELECTRONIC PROGRAM GUIDE
Commercial Free TV broadcasters announced today that they will all be openly broadcasting program listing information by 1 January 2008, creating Australia's first free electronic program guide (EPG). Networks Nine and TEN will transmit their program data from Monday, 19 November, and the Seven Network is expected to commence from 1 January 2008. WIN Television has started providing its 7 day EPG. Prime and NBN will commence on Monday 19 November and Southern Cross on 26 November. Each network will be providing up to 7 days program data which is expected to be receivable free of charge by any digital set top box, integrated television or personal video recorder (PVR) that has an EPG functionality. David Leckie, Chairman of FreeTV Australia said: “This is an exciting new initiative for the free-to-air digital platform which will provide a compelling consumer offering that will further drive take-up of free digital television.” Julie Flynn, the chief executive officer of Free TV Australia added: "This is a great benefit for consumers who will find it easier than ever to plan their Free TV viewing and never miss their favourite shows. "Just as Free TV networks reach every household in Australia, we want our program data to be out there as well. "This initiative will also accelerate take-up of free-to-view digital television, which given the rate of adoption, is now certainly in more than 30 per cent of Australian homes."

Media Release Today’s announcement builds on Free TV’s announcement earlier this year that broadcasters would be providing EPG data under licence to EPG service providers. Ms Flynn added that although Free TV networks were agreeing to transmit the data free and unencrypted, broadcasters reserved all their rights with respect to copyright and protection of intellectual property. -ENDS- For media enquiries, please contact Free TV Australia on (02) 8968 7100 or Julie Flynn on 0408 455 456. Note: The ABC and SBS are already broadcasting EPG data and Free TV will continue to work with them.
interesting, finally some follow up on this. Well ICetv better get their act into gear and give us additional value for money and perhaps HD channel info
Interesting..... I could only imagine that if they are broadcasting this information that they will at least attempt to limit overtime programming.
It still won't appear in MCE though (or from my understanding of how the info will be broadcast) so we will still need the providers like ICE or FreeEPG.
If I read that release correctly the data will be available under license to EPG providers. I would expect that unless the "no skip" provision is enforced then IceTV would almost certainly be looking to make this their primary data source under the said license. Seems I better be hopping over to Ice forums to see if they're onto it!
Just before I do... any chance we can get the source for that release?
I'm not sure as the release says it's building on the earlier announcement that they would license this information to providers. This ones just saying it will be broadcast alongside the program.
I certainly hope they do license it, especially as no EPG (or EPG service provider) i know has the ability to enable, or disable, ad-skipping.

I didn't see any mention of it on the Iceforums, but it's on the FreeTV website.
This is how EPG data really should be. Embedded in the stream. They've been doing it for a while but there was only ever one day's worth (at best).
Now the tricky part is whether this opens the door for Microsoft to provide an EPG for Australian Media Centre users?
As far as I know, Media Centre can't grab the embedded data for use in its guide.
It also makes Icetv's job a little harder. Which is a shame as they have provided a good service, not to mention being the ones to have to deal with Nine.

There has never been an entire days worth just now and next, I believe what you are talking about is the non data video footage that shows the full days lineup. (basically a looping video file that shows today only and totally useless from a data perspective)

Actually, I noticed around 6 months ago that Prime Southern was broadcasting a full days stuff.
Interestingly the old Showshifter program used to be able to update its EPG from the embedded stream. In the UK I believe they actually publish at least a week of data or more which made Showshifter a great option. I figure if those guys could do it then it would be simple for Microsoft to do the same. What would be sensational is if they not only embedded it but updated it in real time to take account of actual start and finish times.
Edit: LIES, LIES and more Damned LIES. If you read this ITWire article you will soon see that there is no reason for optimism!
