Automatic download of guide doesn't seem to work

Hi All.
I am running Vista ultimate and using Free*EPG as my guide (oztivo stream).
As we know, it appears that oztivo is updated for the week on Saturday.
My computer is always on, it is put into "away mode" when not watching TV.

It appears that the background task of updating the guide doesn't work. I have suspect this for a while, but only grabbed my attention over the last week. I was away last week and sure enought the guide wasn't automatically downloaded on saturday, hence I missed a week's worth of show.

I am running the 2 hotfixes with registry entries, and the mcupdate task is back to automatic.

If I open the guide it automatically comes up with the message that your guide will run out in less than 3 days, select yes to download. I select Yes and it will download and fix everything.

Under scheduled tasks for media centre I notice the tasks, OCURActivate, OCURDisocovery, UpdateRecordPath are not scheduled to run. They are not disabled but have no conditions which would make them run.

Any ideas?

Re: Automatic download of guide doesn't seem to work

I actually have the same problem as this. (Vista Ultimate, Free EPG)
In my scheduled tasks, everything seems to be running A-OK, and the mcupdate task actually runs everyday. However, it does not download the guide unless I actively ask it to do it.
Has been happening for a number of months now, but have never got around to trying to fix it. I just go in every Sat arvo, and request a guide download. (One funny thing, is if I ask to download the guide via the XBOX 360 extender, it states it completes the download, but no new data comes through. I need to request it on the machine itself...)
I am setting up a new machine soon, so that will hopefully fix the problem for me.

Cheers,
Curly

I wonder if there is another way we can download the guide? Like run some program. Then we could just schedule that to occur once/twice per day

Re: Automatic download of guide doesn't seem to work

I have a similar problem, but I didn't realise the guide was updated on saturdays. I usually find there is bugger all info in the guide then manually download.

What I have found in the event log is something called "ehsched" (see attachment). Says it runs but I do not believe it is updating the guide.

Hope this helps

Re: Automatic download of guide doesn't seem to work

- Make sure your modem/network/router etc is on and connected prior to turning VMC on.
- Remember that if you are using Oztivo, they tend to update guides late in the week and a whole week's guide is usually updated at the same time. That means for 5 or 6 days the guide may not update at all. For example, you may be using the guide on Friday morning and not be able to go beyond Sunday night. Then, by Friday night, PRESTO, you can see all of next week's listings! (I'm speaking from experience with SA listings)
- I personally prefer the use of hibernation, as opposed to standby, for Vista being able to recall functions properly.

VMC will automatically download listings without you ever having to bother IF you have installed the EPG correctly and attended to the additional Vista bug fixes (see my post here:
http://www.xpmediacentre.com.au/comm...or-14-fix.html )

Re: Automatic download of guide doesn't seem to work

Did you answer no to enhanced playback or the privacy question during setup? I cant remember which one (I think the privacy one), but one of those stops Vista from going out and automatically downloading the guide unless you ask.

Check out the settings under Settings->General->Automatic Download Settings & Settings->General->Privacy. Id ensure that its set to automatic download, and that your not private.

Side note: In MCE Vista the guide is still being downloaded by ehrec.exe. This is launched by ehsched. The original plan was that mcupdate would download everything. However, we ran out of time. In the next version of MCE, the guide listings will be downloaded by mcupdate. Currently mcupdate download everything but the guide listings: Online spotlight / sports / tv setup options.

The ehsched event log entry saying something like it downloaded the EPG is the one to look for in vista (see Patto's post above). That indicates that MCE is going out and automatically trying to download the guide.

Cheers

Mike
