Have had my VMC for a couple of weeks now and have found onboard graphics stutter/drop frames during tv and dvd playback. Mobo is Asus p5e-vm hdmi. Have set all onboard graphics settings in bios to max.
Think I may need a new GPU especially given I have pioneer BDC-S02 as well (having some issues with oem pdvd to be examined at a later date). Considering either MSI N9500GT-MD512 or Palit 9600gt sonic (both handle hdmi without a dongle). Given mobo is mAtx and case is fairly small does anybody know if either of these cards will physically fit, if so which card would you recommend? Let me know if you have any other suggetions also.
Mobo layout PCIe x1 (Compro DVB-E700)
PCIe x16 (to be used for gpu)
PCIe x1 (vacant)
PCI (Auzentech X-Plosion 7.1 Cinema)
Hopefully fan/heatsink will fit between PCIe x16 slot and sound card. Not overly concerned if fan/heatsink covers vacant PCIe x1 slot as I don't have any plans for it at this stage.
The key with these cases (& the Fusion) is the overall height of the card. You've got about 14mm above the top of the card's bracket (where it screws to the case) before you hit the cover or the case.
Going by that, from the photos of the cards that I was able to find, either will fit. Maybe post links to the specific cards just to be sure. The MSI I saw had a fan - they have silent ones, but I think the silent ones will be too high.

It looks like the SPDIF header on the card (think it's the white block near the top of the card) might be a bit tight as it looks like it has top entry. I doubt it will be a problem as the block that plugs in to it only sits 1-2mm above the top on the block of the card, but it's something to consider.

Obviously these cards are using different chipset but another difference which I am not sure about regarding performance is the memory interface MSI = 128 bit Palit =256 bit.
I assume the MSI card would be more than adequate for HTPC but for an extra $40-50 I can get the higher spec Palit card. Which would you buy or would you get something else.
Forgot to say sound through HDMI not a concern as have Auzentech X-Plosion Cinema 7.1 sound card which is connected spdif to amp (amp has no hdmi input). If the spdif cable fits in the Antech case (mobo to gpu) I would instal it however onboard sound disabled in bios to enable X-Plosion. I didn't want to use dvi-hdmi adapter for video as I believe some panels don't like the adapters thats why I am looking for a graphics card with native/quasi native hdmi.
The 2 slot won't be an issue for the case - as you said, your adjacent PCIe x1 slot if free, so that's the only casualty (unless there are any large heatsinks on the board in that area).
Height on the Palit looks fine.
The 9500GT will be more than adequate, but both will do a great job. I use an onboard 8200 & these will be equal or better than that in image quality. The 9600GT locks you in to 2 slots, while the 9500GT is single - you might want to add another PCIe tuner down the track, so the 9500GT has that advantage.
I'd go for the 9500GT, but I don't crave the power.

Could only get the GDDR2 version of the card. Have installed it and all seems to be working OK - no more stutters. Problem now is fan noise from GPU fan. Any ideas of passive cooler that will fit a 9500 card and the antec NSK2480 ? I want my silent machine back. Seems I'm never happy.
I thought it would be a long shot. I have had a look at the Zalman VF700 and sent them an email to see if it will fit the 9500GT. I don't know if it will be any quieter, have you ever seen/used one of these coolers. I has a fan but apparently can run in a 5V silent mode.
The other option is to turn the volume knob on the amp up to 12 o'clock, that seems to work as well.
