Re: GPU to fit Antec NSK2480 ?

I would doubt that the Zalman would be rated for a 9500GT.

Download Nvidia's System Tools & try out the fan control in that.

Re: GPU to fit Antec NSK2480 ?

Thanks again,

Now that you mention it I'm pretty sure I got this util with the driver/setup disk, if I slow the fan speed a bit this will probably quieten it down enough to keep me happy. Sometimes the solution is right under your nose.

By the way Zalman emailed me back and said they don't have a cooling solution for the 9500gt but may have in the future. This is interesting as MSI have a card N9500GT Zilent
which comes with a Zalman Fan Sink which looks a lot like the VF700. Unfortunately I couldn't find this card available Western Australia yet.

Re: GPU to fit Antec NSK2480 ?

Justin,

I installed the nvidia control panel from the cd that came with the board and it had no way of adjusting fan speed.

So downloaded from your link and the control panel looked exactly the same however it also had aperformance tab under which you could adjust GPU fan speed. It seems MSI are running a stripped down version of the control panel.

Unfortunately adjusting the fan speed did nothing, it would appear that MSI have not enabled fan speed adjustment on this card through this software.

I have listened to the fan and it definitely runs at higher rpm when the machine first boots up and then slows so I am guessing that the card monitors itself and increases fan rpm when under load.

At the end of the day this card hasn't helped with the stutter/dropped frames anyway, I now think that this may be a G35 issue and have posted the problem under the cpu forum. I think I read on one of your posts that you have the p5e-vm hdmi did you have any such issue?

Thanks again,

John.

Re: GPU to fit Antec NSK2480 ?

I had a P5E-VM HDMI. I didn't use it as an HTPC for long, but I seem to remember my stutter problems went after a BIOS update.

Maybe you're having speed-step problems (like AMDs Cool'n'quiet) - what power profile are you using (in control panel)? If the CPU isn't set to max, try it at 100/100 min/max.

Re: GPU to fit Antec NSK2480 ?

Justin,

I set up a custom power profile as I was having some issues with s3 (actually waking up from s3). From memory the custom profile is based on the performance profile with a few minor changes relating to s3. When I get home tonight I will check the CPU settings, hopefully they aren't 100/100 and the change will stop the stutter.

Last night I was reading the manual for the tuner and it said to make sure the tuner doesn't share IRQ with anything else. I checked and it does share the same IRQ as the sound card and some other devices, do you think this might be part of my problem? My guess is it isn't related as the stutter is there on dvd playback as well.

I did a forum search here on this mobo and there is so much info it is scary. Do you know if this stutter problem is generic on mobo's with the G35 chipset? If so I may consider dumping this board and getting something else any recommendations given I have E8500 cpu?

Thanks again for the great advice,

John.

Re: GPU to fit Antec NSK2480 ?

The Compro could be troubling the sound card & causing the stutter. Try removing the Compro & then fire up & try a DVD.

I don't think it's the board as such - unless the hard drive controller is causing the issue (unlikely).

If it is the IRQ with the Compro, it would explain why some people with that card have a trouble free existence, while other curse it.

Re: GPU to fit Antec NSK2480 ?

I'll give this a try over the weekend, the problem is the stutter is intermittent so may require me to watch the whole DVD. For example the stutter presented itself only once when I was watching/recording Hollowmen on Wednesday night, I am pretty sure that the stutter occured when there was HDD activity. At this stage I am prepared to give anything a try.

Cheers,

John.

Re: GPU to fit Antec NSK2480 ?

Justin,

Sorry for no post for a while, haven't had time to play with the VMC until today.

Checked power profile it was set to 100/100.

I had a look at device manager and discovered a couple of things which I didn't think would be troubling the system but could be removed without hurting it. When I built the machine I had a PS2 mouse and keyboard but now use a logitech dinovo edge. The PS2 mouse and keyboard appeared in the device list with an ! next to them so I uninstalled them.

Also, the graphics drivers for the onboard graphics were still installed (I didn't think this would matter as the onboard graphics were disabled in the bios) so I uninstalled them as well.

I have watched a couple of DVD's and the stutter appears to have gone.

Also, I only get the occassional stutter with live TV, sometimes this is interference eg when fridge door is opened and closed or wife uses bamix/blender.

Do you get any stutter from your system ?? maybe I am being a bit picky but the only time I got stutter on my old PVR was from interference.

I also tried removing sound, graphics and tuner cards (with uninstall of all software and drivers) and reboot, then replaced them (tuner first in the other pcie slot) then reboot followed by other cards. Tuner now on IRQ17 (previously on IRQ16 along with several other devices). Unfortunately IRQ17 is shared with onboard gb lan and some other onboard devices so it would appear that Compro's wish that their tuner card has its own IRQ just isn't going to happen.

Do you know if the HVR 2200 has any issues with IRQ sharing ?? I might even try one of these and see if that helps. Also my ram is ddr2 667 do you think changing to 800 would help ?? The last hardware item I might consider replacing is the hdd. Currently have 1tb wd caviar green 16mb cache, they now have a 32mb cache version. I am clutching at straws I know, I am pretty sure my current hardware should be up to the task.

All in all the system has improved, I will keep tinkering and see if I can sort it out 100%.

Thanks again,

John.

Re: GPU to fit Antec NSK2480 ?

Only stutter I get is impulse noise related (the lights/fan in the bathroom getting switched off causes it).

The only trouble I had with the HVR-2200 was with the intial drivers not allowing 2 cards to work in the same system - that was fixed in less than a week via a new driver. No IRQ problems.

Re: GPU to fit Antec NSK2480 ?

Do you think I should upgrade any of my hardware to see if it helps? Or should I be going down the software/firmware route?

Also, is the HVR-2200 a hybrid dual digital/dual analogue card? If so have you had any experience with Hauppauge dual digital cards? I'm not particularly interested in having analogue tuners.

John.
