The heatsink was quite thick.... didn't have the hardware to cut it. Looking at some of the passive 8500's they look like they might be ok, but it's hard to tell from the net.

Yeah, I was just looking at them too. Not a single photo that shows them from an angle where you can see how deep the heatsink is.

I've been running an Asus 8500GT 512M with passive heatsink in an Antec Fusion V2 for around 3 months with no issues. The PCI slot next to it is populated with a wireless card, and there's about an 8-10mm gap between it and the 8500GT heatsink. Motherboard is an Asus P5K-VM.
HTH.

I saw that card & thought that it looked like a single slot heatsink.
Does it have SPDIF passthrough (i.e if you use DVI>HDMI, can the audio be passed through the DVI port)?
Question to anybody who wants to answer it: why aren't there more 8500GT actual HDMI cards? My reading of all the stats & blurbs suggests that Nvidia have positioned the 8500GT as their HTPC card, so surely more HDMI support would make sense? My MSI 8500GT has HDMI, but it's a 2 slot heatsink (it's a low profile card).
