Question Home Theatre issues with Audigy 2 ZS

Hey everyone,

I have my pc running digital audio to my Home Theatre via a mono mini-jack to rca lead, and when I'm viewing a source with 5.1 sound the audio is fine and does utilize the full 5.1 capabilities. However, when i view avi's (tv shows etc) that are 2 channel, the sound distorts with all deep bass sounds or sudden increases in loudness during the episodes. The distortion sounds the same as when the gain is too high on any audio equipment.

I've tried lowering the main volume, the volume on the home theatre and switched between 5.1 output and stereo (which only comes out very quiet and muffled when i switch down from 5.1, but if i pull out the mini-jack and plug it back in, it then plays at normal volume in stereo).

Does anyone know of any particular settings I may have wrong? I'm only using a pretty low grade cable between the pc and the home theatre, but i don't get any crackling so I assume that simply upgrading the cable will make any drastic difference...or will it?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers,

ps i'm using an Audigy 2 ZS card and a Philips MX5500D dvdplayer/amp home theatre system.

Re: Home Theatre issues with Audigy 2 ZS

I think a mini jack is analog setup. I think if you go (coax or optical)digital out from your sound card to digital-in to your amp it will fix your problems. I use an audigy 2 in vista with excellent results.

Thumbs up Re: Home Theatre issues with Audigy 2 ZS

Thanks for the help.

Unfortunately my card only has a mini-jack option for digital out, but I did find an adaptor for my rca coax.

I'm still have a little trouble with hiss, when i pause or stop some files, but the main sound problems were fixed by uninstalling all my codecs and re-installing vista codec pack. Sound is great now.

Cheers.

Re: Home Theatre issues with Audigy 2 ZS

Hi,

I had the same setup with the Audigy Value. I bought a cheapie mono mini to RCA cable (Audigy use this for digital coax SPDIF out) and it all worked great.
Make sure you set the Audigy to SPDIF out and set MCE to RCA coax SPDIF out.
are you plugged into the correct output from the Audigy? ie the one that doubles as either SPDIF or two analogue outputs.
You can see why you have to "tell" the Audigy you are using SPDIF out otherwise it will assume you have 5.1 analogue directly from the card. This could explain your problems
