Cr@ppy live tv quality with GA-MA78GM-S2H

I am running the above mobo on MCE2005.

I have a 47"LCD and my live tv quality is really washed out and blotchy. I am using catalyst 8.5 as 8.7 stuffed things up (went into a continuous reboot loop) and connecting via HDMi-HDMi. If I watch a DVD then the picture quality is superb.

If I disconnected my HTPC completey and run a coax cable to my TV (using the TV's tuner) my picture quality is far better. I understand SD tv on a LCD won't produce brilliant results, but there is a bid noticeable difference between tv through my HTPC and straight with a coax aerial.

I use 1 Hauppauge 150mce card.

Any help would be appreciated

From your description the problem is not the onboard video, otherwise all video would be poor.

Suggest you look at codec configuration. What codec are you using for TV?

Re: Cr@ppy live tv quality with GA-MA78GM-S2H

Hi Krypto

I am using PowerDVD 7.3 Deluxe. I haven't installed any other codecs. If I look at the MS codec checker, I see 3 cyberlink codecs, but I haven't set any as prefered. Does this mean that it is using a default MS one that comes installed with the OS? Unfortunately I am not at home so I cannot see what the 3 descriptions are. You by any chance wouldn't know which one to select as prefered (if I need to)

Thanks
Gareth

MCE2005 doesnt have a native codec and its ages since I used MCE2005. I used purevideo with MCE2005.

If you search you'll find that there is quite a bit on this forum about MCE codecs

I found that running Vista the pq gets better, and is not so blocky either. Just my 2c

Re: Cr@ppy live tv quality with GA-MA78GM-S2H

Thanks for the replies

I am not in a position to upgrade to Vista as of yet. I selected one of the cyberlink codes as prefered and the picture quality looks better.

What I might do is try purevideo and see what that is like.

Cheers
Gareth

Re: Cr@ppy live tv quality with GA-MA78GM-S2H

I installed Purevideo and the PQ was better, but I still wasn't satisfied. I borrowed a 7600gt and the pq is much better. My wife said the other night that it looks very good (WAF up 10 points)
Also, by using a separate GPU, my CPU fan doesn't make as much noise (as the CPU is not working as hard) and my HTPC is more quiet.

Pitty, as I bought this board (imported from Aus) as the onboard graphics were supposed to be excellent.

I have to keep reminding myself that SD TV on a 47" lcd is never going to be fantastic, but I want the best that I can get considering the circumstances.

I had issues with picture quality and since I loaded Vista my PQ issues disapeared. I know its a bit of a PITA to load vista but it works for me.

All I am going to say is "uT_____t"
