S/PDIF Out to LCD TV

I can't get sound to come from my PC to my usual TV speakers.
I have the latest Sony Bravia KDL46XBR LCD.
I had a friend build me a PC with a Gigabyte GA-EX38-DQ6 M/Board. Eventually I will get a reciever with 7.1 Sourround Speakers, but at the moment I just want to use the telly speakers. I can get my standard PC speakers to work fine, but after doing quite a bit of research on the net, I thought I could get a RCA to 2 RCA plugs - one going into the SPDIF out and the others going into my standard audio in (which is right beside the HDMI in cable). I have configured the audio on the PC for dts Interactive - like is says in the Gigabyte manual - but still no luck.
What am I missing?? Perhaps it just wont work without a reciever? Or is it the TV? (or perhaps its just the user!)
My friend has moved to Japan, and before i drive 2 hours to town to get a professional to look at it - I thought I should ask the question first.

Re: S/PDIF Out to LCD TV

Your TV doesn't have the ability to decode DTS, Dolby Digital or anything other than PCM audio. Nor does it have a S/PDIF input (it has an output though,I assume so it can passthrough audio from HDMI to another device)

You'll need to use your analogue outputs and send them to the audio inputs.

Re: S/PDIF Out to LCD TV

I concur with dgaust's thoughts.

The audio inputs you refer to on the TV are analogue inputs, probably one for the left speaker and one for the right speaker , you need to connect them to the analogue output from your sound card, you will need a 3.5mm stereo jack to two RCA plugs to achieve this. Check your mobo manual for the correct socket to connect into for stereo out.

Re: S/PDIF Out to LCD TV

Pictures and 1000 words stuff.

Just make sure the sound card is outputting 2 channel stereo in the speaker config and in MCE.
