There is no sound in DVI. Video only. You cannot get audio from video only cable.
ATI cards have a DVI/HDMI adapter which supposed to support sound.

The adapter does allow sound out of the ATI cards.... make sure you get the right one though, apparently the ones that work for the 2x00 cards don't work with the 3x00 series.

Re: ATI HD3650 no sound via DVI to HDMI

The feature of the newer video cards such as my 9600GT that quote HDMI is the ability to use one of the DVI outputs for a true HDMI source with audio. To acheive this they get digital sound via a supplied patch lead to run off your motherboards internal SPDIF header to the video card board (internally). Then they use a spare pin (I assume) in the DVI socket to output the sound on. Using a special DVI-HDMI adaptor they will give you a true HDMI with sound.
So yes I am going from a dvi socket. but in such a way that i get full HDMI with sound through a HDMI to HDMI cable.

These cards will come with special adaptor. You would not be able to get sound through DVI if the card did not have that recent ability, even using a the generic HDMI to DVI adaptors (that I was using previously on my old card).

Re: ATI HD3650 no sound via DVI to HDMI

The card you're talking about is Nvidia, a totally different breed to the ATI cards.

The ATI's actually have a sound chip built into the card for the audio, which means you don't need to run the patch cable from the mobo to the card.

You will still need the ATI adapter if your card runs DVI as opposed to a native HDMI.

In addition, the feature you're talking about was available on the 8x00 nvidia series as well. Not all of them had it, but some of the more popular ones did.
