To Buy or Not To buy Ati 2600pro

Hey guys, I'm no noob when it comes to media centre but I am wondering a couple of things.

Currently I have a nice E4500, 2gb ram, PCI-E HD2600pro hdmi (just to cut it short) media centre setup in my lounge room. I have now got to a stage where I have a significant amount of 1080p content on my media server and it is getting to a stage where my bedroom media centre is becoming less utiliesed because it can't playback 1080p encoded content.

My bedroom specs are P4 3.0Ghz Northwood, 1024mb ram, gainward 7600GS AGP 256mb DDR3. Its a very very basic system originally mocked together to playback divx which it does a smashing job at. Now I was wondering if i purcahsed an AGP HD2600pro( or HD2400AGP as its cheaper) becasue it has the Avivo processor inside would it then take over all the processing of HD content and thus acheive my result of 1080p playback on this system?

Both systems running XP MCE

Thanks in advance

James

Hi James,
This would be largely dependant on the codec you are using for the 1080p playback, and whether if it can utilize the AVIVO VC-1/H.264 UVD and the mpeg2 shaders engines.

Assuming your codec can use AVIVO UVD/shaders, then you would be better off with the 2400 XT or the 2600 XT, they have faster clocked GPU's and faster memory, if you can find one in AGP, i think sapphire do one, and the sapphire 2600XT AGP here.
