Need some help connecting audio

Hi, getting a little confused with the audio part.

My MB says it has "5.1 channels out" with high definition support. but on the back it only has 3 audio ports - blue(line in), green(line out), pink(mic).

From what I've read in other posts I need to use a mini-jack to rca cable. Something like mic jack = front main speakers, earphone jack = surrounds, line in jack = centre & sub woofer.

So I would need 3 of these types of cables? If so, is there a certain type I should get?

Is my understanding correct or am I way off?

I went ahead and tried using those cables and it worked OK. Also used the software that came with my MB to select which ports were connected to which speaker. Works great.
