No sound at all with S/PDIF connection

Hi Guys,

I just purchased a PC with an ASUS P5LD2 x1333 motherboard and I am trying to get sound through the SPDIF connection that comes with the onboard sound card. The reciever that I am connecting to is a Denon AVR 1801 and I am using a coaxial cable (digital audio cable so it says on the box ) to connect the PC to the reciever.

I can't get any sound and I have tried messing with the Realtek HD Audio Manager control panel (Audio codec ACL883/ACL662, Driver version 5.10.0.5397) with no luck.

Can someone please help, I am a little green when it comes these matters.

Thanks
Krunchy

Re: No sound at all with S/PDIF connection

YES!!! I have an ASUS A7Jc and I am trying to do the same thing. I am connecting to a Yamaha amp via an optical cable. I had sound (not in HD) so I tried to download the AC3 Driver and FFDSHOW and installed them and had no sound at all. Deleted them and went back to Realtek and now I have sound but still not in HD.

Things I tried to get SD sound was making sure that you have the spdif unchecked in realtek plus the dolby indicators lit up too. Run the MCE audio set up for DVD's and check SPDIF. Do you have sound on dvd's or music at all?

If you get a fix for this I would be very interested.

Re: No sound at all with S/PDIF connection

Thanks for responding flamingo,

i get no sound at all, even playing mp3's through media player. I can't understand it because with the old PC I had the same set up with a creative sound card and it worked fine.

Cheers

Re: No sound at all with S/PDIF connection

To ask a couple of really stupid questions (please dot take offence I am a relatievly newbie too)

Are you sure the computer has a spdif output? Does the system get sound by using an analogue cable?

Re: No sound at all with S/PDIF connection

Hi Flamingo,

Thats a fair question, and it is not unreasonable to start with the most obvious when problem solving. I am looking at my Asus manual right now and the plug I have connected the cable to is labelled "Coaxial S/PDIF Out port" and I am definitely using a digital cable. Its wierd because my reciever recognises that a coaxial cable is plugged in but it seems that PC does not. Maybe I need new drivers but I am not sure what to download in case I mess things up.

Thanks

Re: No sound at all with S/PDIF connection

Sorry Flamingo (I didn't answer your second question) yes the PC does get sound through the reciever through an analogue 3.5mm (line out on PC) to 2 RCA jacks (reciever)

Thanks

Re: No sound at all with S/PDIF connection

Hi guys
First up you can update your Realtek drivers here
There should be a setting within the Realtek audio manager regarding SPDIF. Depending what the setting actually is it might need to be either ticked or unticked. The last audio manager i had required the SPDIF passthru to be ticked but the current one i have requires it to be unticked, so it depends on what it is asking for.
Just get an album playing and fiddle with the settings.

Hope this helps.
