Converting DVDs with Handbrake

Hello everyone, I know this is a section about converting TV recordings, but i thought this would be the most ideal place to post my question as it relates to it. I've found a program called "Handbrake" that i've used to convert my DVDs for my iPod and it works wonders, i'm looking for the ideal bitrates and settings for converting my DVDs in h264 format to play on my media centre, can anyone fill me in on what settings for DVDs would be ideal?

So far i've come up with:

Resolution: 720x576
Type: h264
Sound: AC3

I'm stuck on deciding the bitrate, should it be variable or constant? I don't mind large file sizes but i want them preferably under 4.7GB, also if anyone could fill me in on any other settings i should play with, i would be very greatful!

Thanks very much in advance, if i can get this all settled it would be ideal, rather than having to sort through a few billion DVD cases to see what i want to watch, i can do it from the couch with the remote.

Re: Converting DVDs with Handbrake

You can do a constant bitrate if you like, however I normally stick to file sizes. I use AutoMKV myself, and set it to 1/3 DVD size (~1.4GB). If you want to do constant bitrate, then start with around 1200kbps, that will give really good HD quality, but you can easy go down as far as 800kbps without too much difference. Use the Deus Ex preset, works a treat.
Be aware that handbrake burns subtitles, so they are constantly shown on the screen and you can't turn them off...I'm going off topic now so I'll stop
