Personally I've only just started using it about 3 weeks ago and it has been extremely handy with no issues at all. Runs in the background and doesn't slow down PC.
I have it convert all my recorded TV onto my MAC into a H264 format for using in frontrow/itunes etc.
That is the only format i've tried with it, I don't really need it for anything else
Have just read up on the MCEBuddy conversion program......
What do users here think about it ,...... easy to use ?? quality ??
I've started using it and really like it - it just sits there doing nothing, requires minimal configuration and just minds its own business.
I'm a manual archiver, so I throw things into a certain directory when I want things compressed down. MCEBuddy watches that directory, and it's all sorted.
Can't speak of the comskip functionality.
I did have a couple issues with one of the output formats not working (H.264?) - and it also lost a couple files while I was sorting with the configuration and stopping/starting the servcie frequently (and had delete input file ticked). Moral - copy files initially till you've got it working.
The only enhancement I'd like is for it to let me mark the start /and end of a programme within the input file, so it crops the file down.
I like it as well. I'm not a big archiver of recorded TV, most of the stuff on these days is disposable, but when I have used it for that purpose it is great. A real space saver.
There were initial issues with the profiles used for encoding but they have been pretty much fixed and it's all sweet. I've even used the auto commercial cutting portion of it and it does a great job, the developers profiles are really quite accurate.
Nowadays, I use it to convert other types of files, including DVD vobs as it's pretty much drop into a folder an await the finished product.
Personally, I can't wait for the version that uses the DVR-MS meta data to name the files instead of it using the file name Windows gives it.

On that note, I'm considering giving this thing a try. What I might do is to use VideoRedo to do the cropping and place its output in the input directory for MCEBuddy. That way I should get the best of both worlds.
P.S As a matter of interest, how does it deal with 5.1 audio? does it retain it or convert to two channel?
The h.264 profile converts to 5.1 AAC. Apparently AC3 audio had major sync problems.
So even if the source only has 2 channel audio, your amp will show it's getting 5.1. Of course, it'll only have audio tracks on those two channels though, it doesn't upmix.

That's what I do, but having a degree in laziness I'd like to be able to mark (or put a time in) for the start and end of the programme somehow, rather then use VideoRedo to mark the beginning end and save it and then plonk the file in MCEBuddy input directory.
I've been using autoGK up until last week when a reformat was done on my PC, and was experimenting with transferred recordings on my gaming machine. I have put MCE buddy onto the HTPC in it's current setup and as far as I can tell it's doing the job just fine, but I'll comment that some formats seem to give more trouble than others. Most of the shows I watch I want to just make an AVI out of and archive some of them, others like the V8's I'd prefer higher quality and will keep the .h264 versions if they are up to it.
MCE buddy looks like a simple and fairly effective tool for the conversions, I also am using Video redo for editing and am hoping to be able to do the state of origin to DVD more easily with that. With a bit of experimenting with the formats you should be able to find one that suits your needs. I'd like to say though it is a simple tool; you get a fixed list of options and it would be nice to see a few advanced setting for some of those but they just aren't there.

No I wasn't talking about upconverting I was referring to programs that are broadcast with 5.1. Do they retain it or does it downconvert?

Yeah I know what you were asking, it does retain the 5.1 audio but converts from AC3 to AAC. The upconverting comment is because as far as I can tell, converts all audio to 5.1 AAC regardless of source. I threw the upconverting comment in because while it is 5.1, if the source is 2 channel it will still be 2 channel but just will show 5.1 AAC in any playback.
But AFAIK it only works with the h.264 profile, but only because I don't use the others.
I suppose if you want an indepth idea of what actually goes on MCEBuddy has it's own support forums that phredeaux is a more frequent participator on.
