.VOB to AVI

Hoping this is the correct place to post.
I have ripped a hundred or so DVD's from my collection to my HDD using DVD Shrink, all compresed to a 4.4gb movie. Apart from having given up on trying to burn these to a dvd or play the whole movie without having to select each of the 4 .vob files I have now decided that it would have been best to have saved these as a much smaller avi file as I have 2 320gb hdd dedicated to storing movies.

I have done a bit of a search around here and found AutoGK that can rip straight form my dvd to avi but can anyone suggest how I can join the four .vob files and convert them to a much smaller avi file?

Auto GK does this automattically for you based on the .IFO file.

I have converted all of my DVD movies to AVI in exactly this way and it has worked flawlessly.

Cue up 2 or 3 movies in AutoGK before bed, and there will be 2 or 3 shiny new avi movies ready in the morning.

Re: .VOB to AVI

If it's Vista MCE you should be able to enable the DVD gallery and then add the directory where the .VOB files are. Then Vista will recognise them as a DVD on your harddrive and you can play it through there.

If you're using MCE2005, I can't help you.

Re: .VOB to AVI

Use VOB2MPG to merge the ripped vob sets into one large mpeg (only takes a few minutes). Drop the resultant mpeg into a folder watched by MCEBuddy set to convert the file to H.264 and put the avi into the Video folder for playback in MCE via My Videos.

Works like a dream for me.

Cheers

I'm wondering if my .IFO files are busted or I havent ripped the dvd's correctly because none of the .IFO files work. If I remember correctly the IFO file is a index of all the vob files and if I click on the IFO files it should play the movie from start to finish.
None of the movies I have ripped will play from start to finish. I have to click on each of the individual vob files, it's a PITA.
I'm wondering if my IFO files are increect and if so will AutoGK still work correctly?

If you want the best video and audio quality, and aren't concerned about file size, use VOB2MPG to convert the main movie vob set into one mpeg and play the mpeg rather than the VOB files. The IFO is not needed by VOB2MPG. You can then remove the video_ts and audio_ts folders.

I only convert the main movie and not all the other associated garbage from my DVD's.

Cheers
