Getting recordings off DVD recorder onto HTPC

may not be the right place for this, but here goes..

The boss' personal video recorder (a Pioneer 550HS I think, no digital tuner model bought about 4 months ago) is almost full. I can connect via USB but can't explore to see recordings and copy them off - anyone have any ideas how this can be done?
