Converting MPEG2 to .avi (Xvid or DIVx)

Well I have tried downloading AutoGK. Can I use this to convert an MPEG2 into a compressed .avi file?

I tried converting an MPEG that I had saved from recorded TV using videoredo. After you press start on Auto GK there is a flurry of activity, but then nothing happens. I left it all night and it was just stopped.

I have ffdshow. Do I need something else?

What is the best program for converting MPEGs to Xvid or divX?

Thanks,

King Hilary

Edit one of your recorded TV with all the same settings, but only do about a minute, so it ends up about 5MB in size, then you could send it his way and he will test it for you.

But I suggest you search on here for MCEbuddy.
THis will do exactly what you want.

Just install it (it is in beta development)
You setup a watch folder, which could be your recored tv folder or another folder were you put your video redo output files (which I do)

Then setup an output folder ( were the converted MCEbuddy file will end up)
Setup a few parameters in MCEbuddy
Thats it!

Now as soon as you have finished with a file and video redo saves it to your folder, MCEbuddy is keeping an Eye this and will convert it for you and put the new converted file in your designated folder.

How good does that sound

Ric

Re: Converting MPEG2 to .avi (Xvid or DIVx)

Thanks for that. I have been keeping an eye on all the MCEbuddy threads. I was a bit worried about it, and similarly about Crunchie, in that it sounded like they would run on converting files of a certain age no matter what, and I was hoping for a program that I could start and just convert the files that I wanted.

But if it is as you say that MCEbuddy will only work with files in a designated folder, then I could just put the ones I wanted in that folder and leave the rest out.

I might just try it. But later, as I have just downloaded the Applian Replay suite, and I would like to see how things are going with it before I add something else new.

Again thanks,

King Hilary.

Re: Converting MPEG2 to .avi (Xvid or DIVx)

It sure does work on any folder.

In fact I don't even have on my MCE machine.
I actually have it on a xp machine on the network.
I also use it to convert home movie (of the kids) and anything else I need converted.

I am using H264 which I think gives good results.
Depending on what I want the end result to be I change the settings in MCEbuddy to suit both the input & output.
You can also disable it when you want and also set a time for it to do its thing

That to me sounds like you needed to minimize the AutoGK window and confirm the EULA for VirtualDubMod or whatever the first program that comes up is.

Re: Converting MPEG2 to .avi (Xvid or DIVx)

Thanks for your interest,

I have had a major setback with the REPlay AV converter, and I have not quite got myself back to where I was last week. I might just abandon AutoGordianKnot for the short term.

My current project is trying to make Acronis True Image rescue my C drive by restoring an external .tib image.

Again Thanks,

King Hilary.

Yep sounds like that to me too. AutoGK gets a severe workout here!

Re: Converting MPEG2 to .avi (Xvid or DIVx)

Hi There,

Want a simple solution for converting Mpg to .AVi (h.264) in 720 p or 1080p or any other format you desire?

Better check out http://mcebuddy.com/default.aspx

1) I used VideoRedo to strip the Video_TS vob files into 1 continuous mpg file.
2) I then dropped the mpg file into the MCEBuddy working directory.\
3) I configured MCEBuddy option "File Selection" to *.mpg
4) Set the profile to 720P(h.264) and started the service.
5) let it run all night

Slow yes on my P3.4ghz. You can put as many .mpg files as you like in the mcebuddy working directory and it will just keep at em till they are all converted.

I've done 2 Dvd's this way and they look great, but i'm not sure if there are side effects as MCEBUDDY was written to convert DVR-MS.

Thanks, I wouldn't mind trying a bit of h.264 and seeing if it's worth the pain.

You should have a read of this thread before doing wholesale mpg to H.264 conversions with MCEBuddy.

Re: Converting MPEG2 to .avi (Xvid or DIVx)

Fair enough, I was still planning on using AutoGK for most of my archives and experimenting with the other to see what sort of results I can get with the biggish recordings of the V8's to see if I could get better quality than some of the AVI's I've done.
