HD ripped movies

What is the best format to rip my HD movies to my HDD and what codecs would I need to view them?
If I install ffdshow, would this suffice. I am a bit confused with Xvid, MPEG4 H264 blah blah blah.
My objective is to maintain best picture quality with original audio tracks at the bet compression rate. Xvid format springs to mind, but this HD is all new to me.

Cheers
G
