Virtualdub won't keep converted file in widescreen
I recently recorded a TV show in Media Center on widescreen (16:9) and it's saved as a DVR-MS file.
I have run this through DVRMS toolbox to convert the file to MPEG2 and remove the ads.
The problem I have is in the next phase where I import the MPEG2 file into VirtualDub-MPEG2 select for the program to use full processing and select the Xvid codec the I save it as an AVI file.
However on playback the file always comes back to a 4:3 image. This is oviously not ideal as I know have a squished image and people seem really tall.
Has anyone come across this before or not? I don't want to use AutoGK as sometimes DVRMS toolbox doesn't pick up all ads and I like to remove then using VirtualDub.
I have uninstalled and re-installed the codec and have also tried it on 2 different PC's with different recordings. So it has to either be a configuration in the program or the codec's default settings.
Re: Virtualdub won't keep converted file in widescreen
The image on the SD channels is always in 1.33:1 (or 4:3) - but is anamorphic, so needs to be stretched. The image on HD channels is 1.78:1 (or 16:9) and not anamorphic and therefore doesn't need stretching.
Using Virtualdub on HD content is straightforward, but with SD content, you'll need to add a resize filter and choose an appropriate resolution. I tend to use 720 x 406, which is one of the largest 16:9 ratio sizes that DivX/XviD capable standalone DVD players can manage.
In VirtualDubMod - select filters from the Video menu, and the click Add. Pick the "resize" filter and enter the width & height required, you also need to enter a filter mode - Lanczos3 seems to do a really good job. The output pane should show the properly resized and stretched image.
You can also set cropping details (it required) - ie for 4:3 or content wider than 1.78:1 - to remove black bars from the sides or top & bottom.

I agree with Adrian. I spent ages getting MCE to recognize anamorphic H.264 conversions (which I managed using Super and the right codec) only to finally realize it was much easier to go with square pixels and avoid any aspect ratio conversion problems.

I don't know what SBS does for HD (720x576p I think), but the ABC uses 1280x720p, 10 uses 1920x1080i, & 9 & 7 (at least here in Sydney now) use 1440x1080i, so even HD is a mixed bag.

Seeing that 1024x576 equates to 1.78:1 (or 16:9) then there's no real need to resize as the aspect is already correct. The main reason to reduce the size to around 720x406 is to make it play on standalone DivX capable DVD players (which generally can only play SD resolution files).
