XviD v H264

I have had MCE for 18months and use videoredo to cut adds from recordings to archive, and use dvdshrink to put my dvds onto hard drive.

I want to get a bit more serious about the achive format to save space and keep quality.

I would also like to think that if i use H262 that there will be stand alone players in the future so I could back up to dvd & watch

Thinking about Fairuse wizard for getting DVD's to hard drive.
And super to convert recordings for archiving after videoredo.

So has anyone used H264 with MCE, which is supposed to be the new format of choice?
Any pros & cons?

Is it correct that only the F/Forward works & you loose the jump to chapter function?

thanx

Re: XviD v H264

I have been using H264 but it has taken a lot of experimentation to make it work. It is probably the best compression codec but may not be worth the extra trouble compared to xvid. The main issues are maintaining 16/9 aspect ratio and not crashing MCE on playback. So far I have had the best results with videredo followed by Super. Now I am trying to use xvid because I bought my son a cheap dvd player that plays it back. So far I havn't figured out a way to crop The Simpsons and make a 4 3 version all in one program. Any ideas?
thanks,
Anthony

Re: XviD v H264

Just used Fairuse & H264 codec on a 6gig dvd iso (138 min)
Tried different outputs of 2.2gig, 880mb, 700mb & the results on my 68cm crt are great.
the smallest file size is hardly any different, even after going back & forth between them to view the same scenes.
Not sure what the average output file size is for xvid movies, anyone?
But at 700mb for H264 I think this is the go

Did you have any problems getting videredo followed by Super to work.
When I view the MPEG with super before encoding it looks all yellow & I am only getting sound in the output.

I have also been looking at a cheap dvd player.
Does it play the H264 encoded video?

None taken, but thats all I got

I am a bit of a tight ass when it comes to buying something new when the old one still works fine.

I also done some screen captures & compared on the pc & they still look good

But I am going to take my pc around to my parants house and compare them on a 106cm plasma before I go head long into converting all my collection.

Re: XviD v H264

Some of TV series I am downloading now comes in XviD and H264.
I have DL some of them and could not see any difference on my 42" Plasma from 700MB XviD. But again, maybe you need 1080p to see it, and here I am in the same situation like you - WAF said this one is good enough, and I can get lost with my gadgetry desires

For the same amount of program duration And similar quality, Are there any differences in file size between Xvid & H264?

Are you saying the 700mb files look ok on your42" plasma$$
What is the play length on these 700mb files?
