Signal vrs dB Noise

HI Guys,

Still have my "L"'s on as my MC only arrived yesterday but I would like to ask a few questions about signal.

I live in the Dandenong ranges and we have always had a few issues with getting TV. So we had a guy come and put in a new antenna. He also put in a signal booster. At the time I only had a cheap set top box but got a good picture on most channels, except Ten. As part of my MC upgrade I got a new TV with inbuilt HD turner. When this was plugged into the line, bingo! Every channel perfect. Sorry about being long winded.

Last night I plugged the antenna into my FUSION HDTV DVB-T DUO DUAL 2 and set about turning it. No problem so far. On all of the channels I have 100% signal, I think the lowest was 95% but I think (?) my dB noise level is to high, as I’m not receiving a very staple picture. I have a little more success with the FusionHD than with Vista MC but either is not a patch on the TV. I would need to have another look tonight (at work now) but I think the db level was getting to 30db. Which I gather is not good?

So after reading a few post do you think I need to get a Variable Attenuator? Should i turn the booster off?

Any advice or help greatly appreciated.

Cory

First describe the antenna path including all other outlets, splitters, boosters from the antenna onwards.

Ok, going from memory;

Antenna on roof, lead inside to a booster box, then a lead from the booster to the TV card.

I will however check this. (the only thing I’m not sure about is if there is a join of two cables going from the booster to the TV card.)

So the lead going to the TV Card is the ONLY antenna point you have in the house?

What I have noticed with the DViCO cards is that they can be very fussy with what type of fly lead is plugged into it.

I had reception issues (checked whole house cabling) and used the same fly lead which was working great with a STB, however gave poorer results with the DViCO / Vista MCE. I changed / swapped out the flyflead and the signal to noise ratio issues I was seeing were greatly reduced.
