I'm using an "AverTV DVB-T Volar X" USB TV tuner on a Vista PC. Generally, the tuner is working fine. However, I'm now trying to set up wifi streaming from my desktop to my laptop and every piece of software I try for this (eg. VLC, Windows Media Encoder) requires me to select my "Video Device" from a drop down list - whilst my webcam is shown in this list, my TV tuner is not.
Is this because my TV tuner is categorized by Windows Device Manager under "Sound, Video & Game Controllers" instead of "Imaging Devices" like my webcam? Or do I need an additional DirectShow driver for my tuner? Any suggestions?
Sorry, but your post is very unclear. You are talking about 2 computers: a desktop and a laptop (and a Vista PC which could be either... or is it a 3rd?).
What exactly are you trying to do here? Do you have the tuner plugged into 1 computer, and are trying to use it to view tv on another?
What I can tell you is that it is NOT because WDM categorises it one way or another (sound video and game controllers is EXACTLY where a tuner should be). If you are trying to use it as a 'video device' you won't see tv anyway, as that refers to video inputs (composite, s-video etc) on your tv tuner, NOT whatever signal you're getting from your antenna, as that would require a DVB viewer of some sort (such as media center) to view.
The tuner is plugged into my Vista desktop PC and I want to use it to watch TV on my Windows XP laptop (nowhere in the vicinity of a decent aerial unfortunately).
I started off by following this tutorial which uses Windows Media Encoder to stream the TV signal over wi-fi:
However, I get stuck at Figure 7 as my TV tuner isn't listed as one of the available "Video Devices". I've since tried following other tutorials using programs such as VLC, but they all require me to select my TV tuner as a video device and, again, it isn't listed...
Well, I'm not going to read the entire article for you, but I can tell you that that article is old, and is from the time of analog tv (or at least, when most people were using it). You have a dvb card, which has no relevance to what they're talking about, which is taking an analog video signal, encoding it (hence the windows media encoder), and sending it. This cannot be done with a digital signal, and thus the process the article describes is not relevant to your situation. You wouldn't want to be watching analog tv anyway.
There is nothing wrong with your tv tuner, or with windows, it's just that that method is outdated. It may be possible to distribute digital tv by other methods (WebScheduler is one way, but it's not free). This is a media center website however, and most of the people here are media center users, and thus not able to help you do something that is somewhat unusual.
If a media center pc was itself able to be used as a media center extender, then it would be easier to do what you're trying, but it's not possible using media center itself at this stage.
