AverTV Duo v Hauppauge 2200

Hi

My DNTV S2 dual tuner has blown up after 14 months, so it is replacement time.

I was looking at the Hauppauge 2200 ($195 locally), primarily for the channel change speed. And also an AverTV Duo Hybrid ($105 locally) to pick up the rest of the recording.

S3 sleep is not an issue for me, and having read everything here the AverTV seems to perform just as well.

So is there any reason to spend the extra $90? (A difference between say 1 and 2 sec channel change would do it- if that is the case, and maybe the second year warranty too)

After all, $90 is half an internal LG Blu-ray player...

Any thoughts appreciated
Thanks
Ian

Re: AverTV Duo v Hauppauge 2200

Im running an Aver TV Duo and have absolutley no issues with it.

To be honest I'm a little baffled by the price difference and was happily suprised at the level that Avermedia pitched it at plus Hauppauge products seem to attract a premium.

The only technical difference I've really noticed is the single aerial input for the Hauppauge so you're saving a few bucks on the splitter and extra cable to the Aver two inputs.

Also you have Newmagic who support Hauppauge locally so it may be easier to get issues resolved.

I've not waded through this monster thread

Hauppauge HVR-2200 - What a fantastic PCIe Dual Digital TV Tuner

but I'd guess it'd tell you everything you needed to know.

Re: AverTV Duo v Hauppauge 2200

Thanks Tak

I had read that thread , and also this one
AVerTV Duo Hybrid+FM PCI-E (777/a16a replacement?)
for the AverTV, which lead me to wonder why I should pay the extra (and started this thread).

Here is a wrap up of what I have done, for people facing similar decisions.

I found no reason (for my needs) to spend the extra $90 on the Hauppauge 2200.

So that leads to my getting the AverTV Duo.

Except I only have 3 available aerial leads (and the AverTV requires 2 each). So I'd get 1 AverTV Duo and 1...?

I still don't see the need to spend the extra on the Hauppage and Eyo.com.au have stock of the DNTV dual tuner (and I am not as bitter about the failure of my current one after 14 months as I was) so I'd get the DNTV for the other one.

Now seeing I'd be getting 1 DNTV, and I know it works in my setup, and people are successfully using 2 of them in a machine, is it worth saving $22 (nett) to get 1 AverTV and 1 DNTV? Not for me.

So I have ordered 2 DNTV duals. Bit if I was starting from scratch, I'd get the AverTV Duos.

Hope that makes sense.

Ian

The number of aerial plugs is not an issue if you have good reception. I run five cables off one plug using a cheapo dick smith splitter (about $10) and reception is fine. This is one aerial into the TV and 4 into my 2 Aver Duo Hybrids. I have nothing but good things to say about them as well.

Agree...as long as you are using good quality shielded cables...I have a single aerial output split into 6 for my 2 x Aver Duo Hybrids, 1 x Video and 1 x TV...Using splitters from DS as well...no problems but I do have reasonable signal strength and good cabling...

I CAN'T STRESS ENOUGH THE IMPORTANCE OF QUALITY CABLES!!!!

I have used cheaper cables and the difference is significant!!

Re: AverTV Duo v Hauppauge 2200

There is a reason why the HVR-2200 is more expensive - it has hardware MPEG2 encoders for the analogue side of the tuners. Basically all that means is the you can use it as a dual analogue or dual digital tuner in MCE/VMC where as the Aver & the DigitalNow S2/Kworld PE310 are digital only in MCE/VMC (although you can use analogue with a software encoder).

The HVR-2200 is designed to be a "one tuner suits all MCE users" option, so if you have digital, you can use it for that, but if you are in an area that is still analogue, you can use it for that (& you can use it for pay TV capture too).

I personally don't think that the encoders justify such a massive difference, but there you go. A fairer comparison is the Aver with the DigitalNow/Kworld, & it's still cheaper than them.

Re: AverTV Duo v Hauppauge 2200

In addition to the MPEG2 encoding, the HVR-2200 is based on newer demodulators than the Avermedia card.

This Aver hybrid business is confusing me. Is this a dual digital tuner or a 1 digital - 1 analog tuner?

Both. There are calling it Hybrid (analogue or digital) Duo (2 of). Maybe the names get shortened too much in the forum.
