Hi,
I have an HP Pavilion pc with MCE 2005, model m1299a, Serial AUW50500WB. It worked fine until about the time the rollups from microsoft were introduced.
Something has removed the tv item from the menu completely. Any attempts to restore the thing by myself, and a hired helper (tech.), have failed.
I can no longer watch live tv on the pc. I have researched this online for several months now and tried all the basic and some not so basic fixes, all of which have failed.
I would be grateful for any assistance, thanks in advance!
P.C.
Generally once things get to that level of desperation the easiest solution is backup your data and reload Windows. A widely held opinion for MCEs is that once they are working well don't try to keep fixing them (or let Microsoft try for you), turn off updates unless there is something you really need. Even then take a good backup before you let M$ update your machine.

Before reinstalling, I would suggest to try to put your tuner to a different slot, if you are allowed to open your PC.
If not, then try to reinstall. You can use imaging tools like Acronis to make a complete backup image of your PC before reinstall.

I think I will reinstall, after firstly taking your advice to attempt to change the slot for the tuner card, if I can identify it - There are several cards there and I'm just not sure how to identify which is which.
Secondly, for the reinstall option, I have two hard drives on my p.c. Can I format the C drive after backing it up to the other drive, or do I need to purchase another external hard drive? I haven't heard of Acronis before but how would I use that in my circumstances please?
Thanks again
Acronis is a disc imaging software that allows you to back-up the entire disc (or just files, if you want) to a second hard drive. This means that if you make changes to your rig and it stops working, then you can go exactly back to how things were the day you backed up. Most of the guys here keep a back-up image of their set-up at a time it was working, just in case.
Having a second internal hard drive to back-up to is ideal. Then you can easily restore the backed up drive including operating system when you want to. Acronis should also allow you to do this from an external hard drive, but I have not been able to get this to work well with my version (number 10).
Norton Ghost is a similar product. Either way you have to buy the software, but I believe that most of the guys here would agree that it is worth it.

Hi, and thanks for the help so far... I have since bought an external hard drive, and have backed up my important things to it.. I'm just not sure of the best way to go about reinstalling/reloading or repairing Media Centre Edition 2005 (xp pro) so as to hopefully get it back to 'factory settings' without doing any damage to anything else?
Do I need a full format of the C drive, or will a partial recovery work? I'm just not sure how to handle this, can anybody enlighten me please?
I have an HP set-up as well. It came with a recovery partition, (drive D) and a program is installed called system recovery. I have never had to use this, but I have a friend who has used this system recovery on more than one occasion to return to his original operating system (factory settings). Do you have system recovery on your machine?
Mine is on the start menu under PC help and tools. My friend just used this wizard to reset his operating system partition. The tools also allow you to create recovery CD's and once he used these when his hard drive packed it in. As I said, I have never had to use it, but my friend said that it was not difficult at all.
Thanks for your help King, I do have the recovery option as you describe on my machine, I guess my only concern would be, the hope that once I run the recovery, I will get MCE back and not just xp pro...
Well I am only presuming that your HP rig came from the factory with MCE installed. MCE2005 I understood to be OEM only. So in that case it should all be back again. As I said, I have not tried it, but for my friend with an identical HP computer to mine, it worked for him, and he was completely back to MCE2005. You would need to go through the initial setup and scan for stations again, but that should not be a big problem.

Just for the record, I finally got around to backing up everything, and then formatted the hard drive, which did as I was told - restored MCE XP, with guess what.... Tuner not found error. So I have gone right through virtually all of the suggested options for recovering Live Tv, and have ended up with no tv still!
Just wondering why factory settings were not totally returned with the format?
I think this problem is just too hard for everybody... It is an orphan problem, none of the manufacturers/suppliers see it as their problem, all blaming each other.
I have also been struglling with this problem for several weeks now. I have an Asus Asteio D22. My graphics card died (it was an Nvidia 7600) and I replaced it with an ATI HD3450, which works fine.
However, whenever I fire up MCE, I get a message "Tuner not installed". But of course the tuner is installed, and Device Manager confirms that the tuner is installed and is working properly!! It's as if MCE cannot "see" the tuner for some reason.
I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling the tuner card, even physically removing it from the machine & putting it back in. Nothing works.
I have spent many hours researching this problem, and read many tales of misery - people who try every single fix recommended in various forums, but MCE just keeps saying "tuner not installed".
I am at the point of reinstalling XP, but I have heard of lots of cases where even this didn't work (eg. as with pfc21).
The other option is to upgrade to Vista (I have the upgrade disks). It seems crazy to have to change the whole OS because of this one problem. However even this is not guaranteed to fix the problem, which also happens with Vista machines!
Are there many errors like this in MCE which simply cannot be fixed?? Looks like TivO and Foxtel IQ2 really do have a competitive advantage here - ie. they actually work and are reliable.
Berkely, Thanks for your reply, good to see somebody attempting to take this issue by the scruff of the neck... I must say it is the most difficult to get any advice on that I have ever come across (helpful advice that is) I have tried just about all of the suggestions, and no the format did nothing to help either. (even though it was good for my computer generally)
You talk about Vista - Can I say that in my experience, seems to have as many problems with the 'tuner not found' error as xp or more! Not to mention the fact that Vista does not seem to me to be an improvement on xp. (I have a notebook with Vista and don't think I would buy another one - so slow!) I don't know where to go from here, just about out of ideas.
For the record, I was finally able to FIX this problem. As per my earlier post, I had tried many different suggestions from half a dozen different forums, including this one, without success. I finally reinstalled XP, and that didn't work either. I continued to get the "Tuner Not Installed" error.
So I bit the bullet and upgraded to Vista. And guess what - the first time I launched Media Centre, I got the same error, which is called "Tuner Not Found" under Vista. Again, tried heaps of different ideas for Vista machines, without success.
Eventually I just downloaded all of the Vista upgrades - over 65 of them in my case (as my copy of Vista was from 2007). Buried amongst all of those was an update from Asus for my TV7162 hybrid card. And once all the upgrades were installed, the problem disappeared and Vista MC recognised my tuner.
So it was a drastic fix - ie upgrade the OS from XP to Vista, and download over 100 MB of upgrades - but at least the problem is gone now.
