Audio Issues sending me MENTAL

Now I have a brand spanking new computer for which i was advised by the supplier to get a Hauppauge hybrid card HVR 1300 tuner which i discovered afterwards required MCE 2005-now added.

Now I have 24 channels to choose from for which only 7 work well great picture and sound, the rest have a great picture but no audio.

I get no audio for SBS at all.
All HD channels for Ten work well
I get one of the four Channel Nine channels with sound
Channel seven 1 of the 6 channels with sound
ABC 2 of the five work fine with audio.

So either the TV networks broadcast in different formats for some channels within the same network and i dont have the codecs/decoders for the audio side though get the picture clear as - which is just plain weird.

Can some one help me ?! Its driving me CRAZY.

I have surfed all the MCE microsoft sites and no joy, I tried Hauppauge no joy and I have surfed through all the forums here to no avail.

The maddening thing is that there so many Hardware to software combinations.

So at this point I have no idea if the problem is related to Hardware , codec's or MCE, so i apologise in advance because i posted this on the mce software for xp forum aswell. .

You think if the Hauppauge Product is designed for MCE that it shouldnt be this, but.....

So far I have been nice to my computer retailer and Hauppauge supplier but I am starting to get twitchy.

CAN SOME ONE HELP ME PLEASE, in fact PRETTY PLEASE (sorry to shout).

I am prepared to share Landscaping advise for answers.

My brother works at TV network and even he finds it bizarre but he admits audio is another animal all together.

Many thanks in advance.

O/S - XP pro MCE 2005 sp2 Ram - 4GB Mother board - Intel 2 Quad Q6600 2.4 GHZ Video card - Geforce 8800 GT Sound card - Creative/SB XB-FI 2.1ch

It sounds like it's the channels with AC3 audio you aren't getting. Windows does not natively support AC3.

Download either AC3 filter, an AC# audio codec, and install it or, possibly more useful, a copy of FFDShow, which will allow you to decode avi files as well as AC3 audio. Both are freeware.

If you usev FFDShow, make sure that mpeg is NOT selected for the video decoder and that the ONLY audio selcted is AC3.

Correct me if I'm wrong but if my memory serves me right update rollup 2 supports AC3 audio or at the very least SP/DIF pass-thru. In any case you need to make sure you install all mandatory and optional updates and run WindowsUpdate a number of times until there are no more updates shown.

I'm not sure Phil. I always had AC3 installed. Something tells me AC3 wasn't supported, but I could be wrong. It happened once before - 1979 I think.

But you are right, keep going back to Windows update until no more critical patches are offered and if you still have the problem after that, give AC3 Filter or FFDshow a go.

I just did a bit of a check since I never had AC3 Filter installed and I used to disable audio decoding in FFDShow. Yes AC3 audio IS supported after update rollup 2 without any 3rd party decoder.

Re: Audio Issues sending me MENTAL

Just a quick qualification on my previous post. The research I did didn't actually confirm that a 3rd party decoder was unnecessary but if you use SP/DIF pass-thru then a decoder is unnecessary anyway. The fact is that you should only need a 3rd party decoder for analog audio connections since digital connections pass the job of decoding to an external device like a receiver or amplifier.

Re: Audio Issues sending me MENTAL

I think AC3 or FFD will help however from a different perspective - I run fox through my Happyi card but it all comes down in analogue and I take 7, 9, 10 etc of Foxtel. However I also run a HD box because I needed a backup and this runs direct into my amp with HDMI switching.

So from a non computer perspective HD 10 comes down in 2 channel dolby unless a rare movie event takes place - 9 til just recently is now in 5.1 - 7 is still in 2 channel ABC HD is in 2 chanell dolby but SBS HD has now enhanced audio and comes out in straight stereo - not dolby and they are different combinations.

What I am now wondering is if your difficulties are die to different broadcast streams from different FTA's in terms of audio - if that is the case then fixing becomes harding as you need to insure the processing meets this - but it may be a matter of AC3 not functionally properly - just some thoughts just to assist in the madness.

Hope you fix it.

Cheers

Update Rollup 2 was in fact an optional update. If you haven't installed it then you should and then go back to see if there are more updates. (Some don't show up until UR2 is installed.)

Don't use codec packs.
ffdshow can do anything you want. I have ffdshow and haali splitter for mkv's
You don't really need AC3 filter.

vlad, is it reliable getting ffdshow doing AC3? Degree of difficulty?
