Channel Scanning & Stutter

Hi guys,

Thought I would make a new thread for this, as it is something that tends to get skipped over in the desire to work out problems with the MCE software.

If you are having issues with stutter or lack of ability to scan certain channels and have not got a signal amplifier.

Stop.

Go down to Dick Smith and buy yourself the best one they have. You can get the ones that go direct from the mast, or (as I have) the ones that plug into your antenna port in your lounge and a power point, for a very reasonable price.

The reason for stating this is we all now know that MCE is VERY fussy when it comes to scanning for channels and even if you can get perfect signal in the manufacturers provided software, this does not mean that you will get the same quality in MCE.

If you consider how much time is spent trying to solve what may very well be signal problems, for the $70 or so dollars it costs to get an amplifier, you would probably end up saving a great deal of time (remember, time is money!) with what has a tendancy to end up being a signal issue.

I bought one before I even set up my HTPC and have therefore been able to rule out signal as one of my problems, and the solutions have come quickly and easliy.

Just thought I would post this, as there seems to be a very high number of posts regarding potential signal issues, and it is always nice to rule that one out off the bat.

My 2 cents,

Schlep.

Re: Channel Scanning & Stutter

I'll add 2 cents of further info and some caution...

You really should not need a masterhead amplifier if you live in a CBD area... and have a good antenna and good cable.

The problem with Masterhead amplifiers is that if you get a crap signal to start with, you are just magnifing the problem. If yoiur getting bit errors at the source, you could be multiplying the errors and cause MORE stuttering.

Similarly if your in a good reception area, and use a masterhead amplifier it is POSSIBLE to create a signal that is TOO strong and cause additional problems in your reception.

Having said that - yes its possible that for some of our members here are needing of a masterhead amplifier - I am just throwing some caution to the wind.

The ones sold at dse - are actually (for once) one of the better systems available. They are manufactured by GME Electrophone using the brand name of Kingray http://www.gme.net.au

The range at DSE is very limited, and you will find newer models are available at more specialised places such as Radio Parts that offer a high gain than the models at DSE - for the same price.

I highly recommend the Kingray powered splitters - some models available at DSE - but these are consumer models with normal RF plugs that come in 2 or 4 way splitters. They look like a plugpack type thing in white plastic.

If you can find them - I would suggest the F connector ones at least - the screw type plugs - however last time I checked at DSE they did not stock them. I know that Jaycar does.

Better still - and at the same price - you can get powered splitters from Kingray stockists such as Radio Parts that are all RF shielded in aluminium cases (SA 164R for example) - and these units just Rock,
