Question Question about tuner cards with AV inputs

Hi guys,

Theres something that im not sure about with these cards that have 1 or 2 tuners and an AV input.

My question is:

For instance if you have a tuner card with 1 Analogue tuner on it and an AV input on it as well, does MCE see those as 2 individual tuners (when for instance your using the AV to connect Foxtel & the tuner for FTA), so you can watch analogue tv as well as Foxtel through the AV, or does MCE see this as just a single tuner? (so you can only either setup Fox through the AV or FTA on the Analogue tuner, not both) i didnt know if the analogue tuner and the AV inputs were linked or seperate...

this leads me to another query:

If you plan on hacking MCE so you can use analogue as well as digital tuners together, can you then use a card that has a digital tuner, an analogue tuner & AV inputs to watch Digital FTA via the antenna input as well as Foxtel on the AV. or would i just be better off sticking with my existing digital tuner card and then getting a seperate card that has an analogue tuner & AV inputs?

I currently have a Hauppauge Nova-T-500 Dual Digital Tuner card and i was looking at the possibility of getting a card along the lines of a Compro T750 which has a digital tuner & a seperate analogue tuner and AV inputs, so the combination of the hauppauge card and the Compro card would give me 3 Digital tuners and AV input for Foxtel. But i wanted to know if the setup would work.

Big thanks to anyone who can help me out with this! im getting Foxtel installed today and so im looking for a solution thats gonna work best.

Thanks guys,

t-man

Re: Question about tuner cards with AV inputs

I guess just to simplify the question i should just ask this:

On tuner cards with av inputs can the tuner and the av be used idividually? or can you only use one or the other?

take the hauppauge pvr-150. in MCE can you only use the av inputs or the tuner? or can u use both independantly? ie, watch tv while recording off the av?

cheers.

Re: Question about tuner cards with AV inputs

I could be wrong, but it's been my understanding that the tuner card has to be a true "dual" tuner, not a hybrid. That means it has separate tuning abilities and preferably an onboard mpeg encoder for the analog section as well.

It depends on the make of tuner cards you're looking at. For example, I have an older Compro T750 which can only be used as either a digital FTA tuner, or an analogue tuner for Foxtel...not both at the same time. I need a separate analogue tuner for the Foxtel.

There are some cards on the market that can do, but you'll need to do some homework. I suggest having a look at the swap meets and before you buy anything, download the user manual from the manufacturers website. If you're still unsure, put another post up here.

Good luck,

Tony
