Well it wasn't a smooth ride that's for sure, pretty much everything that could go wrong did!
The biggest problem was the file size of the xpmediacentre tarball and getting it transferred to the new server, I've sure learned a lot more about working in the Linux shell after all this.
No matter what I tried, the transfer of the tarball broke down around 70% of the way across, usually after 2 to 3 hours. Of course the Web host manager transfer (easy option) didn't work either so after hours of scouring Linux forums last night, I finally found a command which enabled me to transfer the tarball overnight without timing out - it took over 4 hours at 650kb/s!
For all the Linux shell geeks out there, this worked when all the others wouldn't - scp -c arcfour /home/cpmove-xpmedia.tar.gz 74.55.251.242:/home/
This morning I awoke to the file sitting where it needed to be, although I had no idea if had come across intact and I was as nervous as hell in case it had corrupted, if it had corrupted I would have been at a loss what to do next!. So then came the unpacking and restoration of the main account and databases, it took around 45 minutes just to unpack and install this account but thankfully that went well. Then when I started to check things over I had server 500 errors everywhere! So after another 3 hours I learned that PHP 5.2.6 doesn't like PHP switches to appear in any .htaccess files - yeah, like I knew that one off the top of my head.
Got it all working and somehow then managed to inadvertently upload an .htaccess file into the site's root which should never have been there, that's why you would have been asked for a password to access the site for a while this morning. To figure that one out I needed the tech guys to help since I didn't even realise I'd upped it to that directory!
So here we are, it's going to be interesting to see how it all performs, next job now is to figure out how best to optimise VBulletin on this server, so we may not yet see all the speed that should be available until that's done, it does seem quicker however but that might be because nobody is on yet.
OK, time for shower and some brekkie, glad it's all over and not something I'd want to do often!

I woulda split that file into a dozen and transfered them separately. Nothing worse than a large transfer dying 80% of the way through. Reminds me too much of Windows
Still. A good opportunity to learn some cli. Keep it up and soon you'll hate those gui's
Cheers,
Arkay.
