Request to speed up the site.

Latley i have noticed that this site is really slow, compared to "other sites" that also use this forum software.

Can you prehaps remove some of the extra addons that some people may or may not use, this site seems to have more addons than firefox has extensions

Or could you enable theme selection so some members have the choice of using a less graphic intent theme.

Im not sure whats causing the site the respond slowly but maybe look at a different host? maybe run the database server and web server on different servers?

I remember back in 2006 when this site used to be really fast and respond faster than the speed of light. Lately it just seems like its got more addons and applications than some facebooks pages.

I prefer simple and fast, not overglorified and slow.

Just my 2c

I'm sure Mike would be overjoyed if you wanted to pay for new hosting!

Yes, sadly we are slower these days and I've made quite a few comments on that issue with the same explanation over the last 12 months.

It has nothing to do with the "extras" - they're only plugins and if nobody's using them, they can't very well be causing additional load.

Not sure whereabouts this theme is "graphically intense" - we only have a header, it's new and uses smaller file sizes than the old one. Having tested it thouroughly, even the stock VB theme takes as long to load as this theme does - on this server.

That all sounds great - but it as I'm sure you already knew, it comes down to money. Two servers equals twice the cost, and I struggle every month to find the money for one. My host is one of the top rated and fastest out there, the simple reality is that we have a tired old box combined with about 10 times the traffic that we had 2 years ago - often seeing 2,000 people on-site at any time, rarely less that 1,000 and 100 new members joining every day - and the majority of them using the "search" function which of course smashes the database - so it's nothing more complicated than that - we're a victim of our own popularity and that's the only reason behind our slow performance.

Like you, I wish it were different, and I wish my advertising revenue stream was working out as planned - but right now it isn't, and the cost of the required upgrade to handle current traffic and allow for growth is going to double what I pay now - and that's only for one box - and not even in Australia.

I can't take the risk of signing a monthly contract committing to over $800 usd a month and then find that my ad revenue (trickle) dries up and I can't pay the bill. So once I've saved up around $8,000 to cover all costs for a full 12 months, we should see a significant improvement.

Re: Request to speed up the site.

To all those ranting and carring on that this forum is slow may by you should donate some money towards making this forum faster.

I'm sure Mike would really appriciate it.

Otherwise put up with it.

Re: Request to speed up the site.

Thanks Strada916

To be fair though, I discontinued accepting donations during the Reeltime saga and didn't restart them in the belief that my ad revenue would start to flow in April/May, sadly it hasn't as yet, although the signs are that it's getting closer, or maybe I keep saying it 'cos I want to believe it.

Yesterday I was doing quite a bit of dev work and housekeeping around here and the slow load times were killing me as well, so last night I ordered a reboot which seems to have helped a little. I got so ticked off myself late yesterday that I was just about ready to take the punt and whack 6 months hosting straight onto my CC.

It's always been the same for private sites like this, until they either make enough money to cover costs, they get full or joint sponsorship or a cashed up someone buys them (i.e. our case last year or TGB now), they'll always struggle if they outgrow themselves.

But after my dreadful experience last year with Reeltime, I've no intention of going down that road ever again, so until the money side of things changes, and in the absence of a magic wand, my sincere apologies go out to everyone who's affected, but sadly, there's not much more I can do.

Re: Request to speed up the site.

Given the circumstances I think your'e doing a bloody good job

Given the quality of this site I am happy to put up with the relatively slow speed. I think people are getting a bit spoilt. My connection recently reverted to dial-up speed for a couple of days, now thats slow
