I've just finished setting up another new feature which came with VB 3.7 - Thread Prefixes.
These are general tags selectable when starting a new thread, they attempt to (basicly) identify (in thread view) what the thread is about.
I've enhanced the function by making them clickable and searchable so finding similar information should become a little easier.
I've made a start with a range of prefixes applicable to different forums, at this stage I'm still learning how best to set it up, so if anyone has any suggestions on what might be commonly used tags they'll be most welcome.
Mike

These are really annoying/distracting, draw the eye all over the place and generally add to all the other visual confusion on the page (banner ads, colours, colours, colours, gear animation, etc etc...Mike, less is more).
Mike,
Actually I am having a good day. Perhaps I am referring to the wrong thing...I am referring to the COLOURED prefixes that appears next to the titles of (some) of the posts in say, the New Posts view.
As to your page link, actually, I prefer it. I understand the need for banner ads, accept that they are a fact of (your) life, and so one. It's all the other visual clutter that has slowly been accumulating on, say, the New Posts view with layer upon layer of panels within panels, all screeming loudly in shades of blue, green, teal, and grey, but saying nothing.
Even on my monitor with a vertical resolution of 1050 (not that great but probably average or above) I get to see between 5 and 6 lines of posts. That's silly.

For an example of (what I consider at least) a clean design for a web forum you could look at this (and still have room for your ads).
I remain, however, your faithful servant
Hugs, Oz
I'm sorry Oz, but the page you link to looks about as exciting as an actuaries spreadsheet. I believe Mike has found a balance between being informative and attracting paying sponsors / advertisers, I'd say 200K plus registered members here means its working.

I'd say the poularity of this website is due more to its content than its aesthetics, but I give you full marks for brown nosing anyhow.
Look, it's not totally over the top in terms of item arrangement but it's headed in that direction. This is the forum feedback section after all, and if criticisms are always to be responded to with inferences that "someone is having a bad day" (which was pretty rude) merely because they think improvement could be achieved, we should
(a) rename this section to Positive Site Feedback Only or...
(b) just remove this subforum since the time I've spent offering feedback is clearly unappreciated.
And before someone else decides to chime in with comments of the "could you do any better" ilk, my response would be that I am not a website designer, nor do I have to be in order to decide what I find appealing, any more than I have to be an architect to know what I find appealing in the design of a house, use of space, etc.

"Brown nose", very funny, I find myself at odds with Mike and more users over my participation in this forum than almost any other user.
You offered a personal opinion on a public forum which makes that opinion open for critique within the bounds of the T&C and thats all there is to it, you do it yourself all the time, so if the shoe fits...
As for this site aethetics, you have the final word of what appears on your screen or not when you visit this site or not ...... choose.

Indeed I did offer an opinion, and one that you didn't respond to directly, i.e., only offering up some defense of Mike, which he hardly needs, and site popularity, which was never in dispute. What do you think of the aesthetics I was opining about, if you are going to critique my opinion? Try to stay on tack.
Your last sentence is reminicent of the "my country, love it or leave it" attitude which is has always been a neocon favourite mantra, even if it is juvenile.

Defense of Mike? I said the site has a balance of aesthetics and advertising what more is there to say. I used the number of users of this site as a measure vs. the number of people complaining about the aesthetics - you and a few others. 200,000 plus vs < 10 puts you in an extreme minority. try to comprehend what others are actually saying as opposed to what you think they are saying.

Well I suppose, like many features hidden in programs on the computer, these thread prefixes would be a great tool if I used them properly. And by all means they should stay, if people are making use of them to gather their thoughts together or helping to search for things,....
but I am pretty slow on the uptake, and usually click on the prefix instead of the thread... I then try to think for a minute where have I gotten myself, before going back to click on the actual topic. Therefore, until I start to use them correctly, I find that I agree with Oz that they are a distraction.
I am sure I will get better at it, but if no-one uses a feature it becomes clutter.....

I did the same, but learning now.
I am more distracted by the tag icons, it is harder to see what posts are subscribed.
