I can't say I'm a fan of the restriction on replying to old threads - i can see where Mike was going with it - people should start a new thread specific to their problems - but the other side of the argument is if they do have the same problem then it's nice to keep all the discussion in one place.
Anyway I was trying to reply to the crunchie thread but i cant because of its age and its a sticky only - if i started a new thread mine would be the first normal one. I'll go and use quick reply now, but some people wouldn't know about this so I wanted to mention the issue here.
As you suspected, some time ago we became inundated with new members reactivating threads up to 18 months old and most of the time found that nobody replied.
I applied the "old thread" hack to ensure fresh content and a better chance of someone helping.
There should be a work-around available to you, but first I need to know the URL of the thread in question.
Once I get that I can (hopefully) guide you through the solution.
Mike

In my own testing, the "old thread" thing has never prevented replying, it's more of an alert to inform people that the thread is more than 45 days old and there may not be any value in resurrecting it.
When I troubleshoot this (as my test user), I'm able to use the standard reply button with no problems, if however I want to use quick reply, after selecting the post I want to reply to, I need to then check the box to acknowledge that I'm aware the thread is old, once checked, I'm then able to "quick reply" as well.
Can you please confirm if it's the same for you?
Thanks,
Mike

Hi Mike - did you change the date on the Crunchie thread by any chance - a funny side-effect is the "hot topics for this week" hehe
I used the normal "post reply" button at the bottom of the thread and it brought me to the editor where I typed in my post, i cant remember if I clicked preview or not, I think I didn't, but just clicked submit and it came up with a message saying the thread was more than 155 days old or something and I couldn't reply. I have to go out now, but I'll some tests for you when I get back.
Hey Mike let me know if you want me to test anything more around this and if so how I should do it without putting test posts in inappropriate spots
Cheers
Thanks Mick but seeing that I've got the big upgrade coming up, all the templates will
be reverted to stock, so I might leave that modification out to see how we go without it for a while.
Thanks again.
Mike
