Server Downtime

Let me begin by apologising to everybody for the site being down for a number of hours today.

The cause was a mistake I made for which I should be royally flogged!

The domain delegation (nameservers) I've used since I built this site were ns1 & ns2.support-hosting.com, which originally belonged to a small web hosting business I ran with a friend (Harry) for a couple of years until this site started to take off. Because this site has been on the same box we used for that business , there was never really a need to change the nameservers. I've been aware for some time that the old support-hosting.com domain was due to expire soon and I'd planned to switch nameservers just before it did.

Well today the site went down whilst I was at work, and once I started troubleshooting when I got home I realised that it had to be DNS related - but why? - the support-hosting domain didn't expire for another month!

OOPS!
The domain had expired on the 3rd February 2008 (02/03/2008) - I'd completely missed the difference between US & AUS date formats! - what a STOOPID novice mistake to make!
So rather than renew an old and unused domain, I fixed up the server configuration, created a new set of nameservers with the registrar and waited for the change to propagate - and here we are again.

Again - humble apologies - must be getting old! <mumble, mumble>

Re: Server Downtime

I'd just blame it on the Yanks. They can't get their dates straight.

Re: Server Downtime

Makes me feel better,

I promised SWIMBO that I would tape the original King Kong movie, on ABC late. a couple of nights ago, but set the machine to tape May second instead of February 5.

Next morning of course, no program saved!

At least now I know I am not the only one who makes that mistake..... (but for me not the first time).....
