I have used this forum from time to time , BUT what I find most frustrating about it ,(bearing in mind I'm just punter bumbling my way thru the HTPC maze).
I think on the opening forum page there should be a link that shows if you have a question for the forum just under what title it should be posted.
For example today I need to enquire about setting up a second HD and Raid settings etc....
Is it software , is it hardware , or building your own , beats me , but I know if it is placed in the wrong section I either get no replies or told abruptly that its in the wrong forum.....
In my opinion, your question would probably go in the hardware section since it doesn't sound like a total rebuild-from-scratch job.
Where ever you put a post, post it once so all the replies will end up in one thread rather than posting it in multiple places, as some people have done in the past, with replies strewn across them.
Don't you reckon a total newbie who is overcome with ignorance on this subject but is seeking answers could be assisted with a glossary style map as to where to post...
I would expect a noob to first execute a search on whatever they are interested in finding out and see which sub-forum previous questions had been posted within.
Basiclly, even if you post in the wrong area, nobody is going to jump all over you with the possible exception of posting non-technical stuff anywhere other than the Pub.
I'd be really surprised to see anyone get jumped on around here for posting a RAID question in software rather than hardware, we're just not like that
The only times I cal recall seeing comments about getting things in the right forum are when XP and Vista questions get in the wrong place (and face it if you can't figure this one out its time to take the PC back for a refund ), and as Ozbear said, non technical important social commentary anywhere but the pub.
Having said all of that, if you think its worth while, why not draw up a guide and get it into the knowledgebase area, it can only help.
