Re: Plugged in but nothing happened

    Hi

    Update on this issue.

I took the PSU to the seller who checked and showed me it was working in the shop.

Returned home and tried the bench test approach.

With just the CPU, RAM, keyboard, mouse and monitor installed the fan on the CPU and PSU work fine. There are no LED lights on the MB and I'm not sure where they should be, I can't see any LED lights. The problem is that I get nothing on the monitor. I have tried both my LCD (through HDMI) and a CRT but I get no signal on either.

Tried reinstalling everything else but this causes PSU and CPU fans to stop working.

Pulling my hair out a bit here

    Any help would be appreciated

    Thanks

Re: Plugged in but nothing happened

The fact that the fans stop when back together is a worry, but I say forget that for now, and go back to the test bench approach. The pics of the MB's front panel connectors were hard to see properly, so may or may not be the issue.

Try mainboard on it's box (not the static bag it came in), power supply out of the case and only the 24 pin and 4 pin connectors plugged in. If the P/S has an 8pin secondary connector, use the 4 pin half of it labelled P2. I would be safe, and unplug and replug in the CPU and RAM (just 1 stick).

Hopefully you have a little PC speaker in the case, or separate? Plug it into the MB speaker connector, following correct polarity in the mainboard manual (red is plus, but I'm sure you know that ).

Now touch the two power pins on the front panel header part (again double check manual to be doubly sure) with a metal screwdriver (same two pins as front power switch). Fans should come on?? No Beeping?? No display?? Switch P/S off then on again, take out remaining RAM module, try power switch again, if still no beeping, I'd have to suspect the mainboard, either faulty from day one, or shorted somehow during the initial build. Very unlikely to be the CPU, that's very rare.

See how you go and let us know.. Good luck!!

    Cheers

Re: Plugged in but nothing happened

If you have no speaker, and still no luck, try the other RAM module instead.

Either way, if still no joy, I would take the MB, CPU, RAM and P/S back to the seller and get them to test it for you.

    Cheers

Re: Plugged in but nothing happened

    Hi TiggerK

    Results from suggestions;

Plugged in external speaker and received no beeping or display with 2 then 1 (tried both on their own) then zero RAM.

One thing I didn't mention before is that the Mouse lights up but the keyboard doesn't (caps lock etc)

    Thanks

Re: Plugged in but nothing happened

Well then from lots of experiences, you should take the P/S, MB, CPU, and to complete the picture the RAM, back into the shop and kindly ask them to test it in front of you, or at least let you see it working when you return.

Normally, MB, CPU, a known good P/S, no RAM and no beeping means mainboard bad.

Mind you I did see a faulty P4 CPU this week, now that's rare.

    Good luck.

Re: Plugged in but nothing happened

that mainboard should have a LED between the PCI sockets. Once you have it on like you said before, the led should be on and will continue to be on once the unit has powered up and also when it goes into off or standby mode.

if this is not happening then two things could be wrong

    a. no power (I think we have solved this one, there is power) possible power plug not in all the way? However you already said that you are able to power up with bare minium
    components!

    b. faulty mobo.

Jorgmatt are you in WA? If your in WA I can test the gear for you. at no cost.

Adelaide is a bit far for me for house calls

Re: Plugged in but nothing happened

    Hi guys

Latest update - took MB, CPU, and RAM to shop and they confirmed that the MB was dead. I am waiting for replacement and will let you know how things turn out.

You guys are awesome and your help is really appreciated. Hopefully in time I can help someone else out (doubt it though)

P.S - Strada thanks heaps for the offer of a house call if I was in WA. If that's you in your picture I would consider paying the air fair to Adelaide for a house call

Re: Plugged in but nothing happened

    Hi all

I have replacement MB but It doesn't get any easier

1.Through the bench test method I have established that the original problem I had with no power is being caused by the system fan plug. If it is plugged in there is no power to anything. I tinkered around with different things removed and it is only when the system fan plug is plugged in that the system won't fire. The fans work fine without out it plugged in. Does anyone have any ideas what might cause this? I was thinking it may be a wiring issue because it has happened on both MB's. Also is it ok to continue installation without this plugged in. Both fans are set to low if that makes a difference

Re: Plugged in but nothing happened

NOt sure what you mean here, system fan plug is a three pin white connector?? Does it have a 4 pin big power connector as well?? If so, only plug one of the them in not both. Maybe the system fan plug only has one white cable going to it??

If the fans all work, then whatever you are plugging in probably shouldn't be plugged in.

    Cheers
