    DVR-MS editing in Vista

    Hi,

I have just started fiddling around with editing recorded TV. I've basically set things up so that the Data partition on the HTPC is fully shared with my desktop, so I can copy files over for editing, then copy them back.

I've just done a movie (cropped ads + start and finish) in Movie Maker. I'm now at the point of 'publishing' the movie, but it won't let me keep it in an uncompressed format (as far as I can tell).

    Is this accurate?

Is there anyway of editing and NOT compressing DVR-MS??? Either with Movie Maker (ideal) or some other way?

    Hi bbboy,

That is correct, Movie Maker will not let you publish back to DVR-MS, but it does let you burn straight to DVD which i really like for a quick "top, tail & burn" ...

There are other options, amoung them Video ReDo will come highly recommended which is a commercial product.

Another option which is currently in BETA but is showing alot of promise is TV Toolbox, which lets you do editing and/or conversion within VMC using the remote You can get more info on this product in this thread here:

    Cheers

I've just downloaded it, cut out the ads + 'top and tail' and am now trying to output it as a DVR-MS file...

    Estimated time? 30 minutes!

Seems to me that it's converting it... Or will it really take this long to simply cut out frames?

    Am I doing something wrong?

All I'm after is something to cut out selected frames from a recording, without compressing or converting or changing anything else about the file...

I didn't think you could output to DVR-MS again. Depending on how long your video is and how you've saved it (like I do mine in 10Mbps MPEG) it will take a while or a few minutes. For about 45 mins it takes me five or so minutes.

My mistake. I never enabled DVR-MS output in VRD so you're right. But it might take a while depending on the length. 90mins takes around 15-20 minutes so you might have a little longer?

    Ahhh!!!

I've taken a screenshot of what happened. I delved into the 'properties' of the new file as I'd noticed 'blocking' of the image. I don't know how else to describe it really.

The properties box on the left is the original recording. The properties box on the right is the videoredo top and tailed/ad removed version.

I have NO idea why it has changed the frame width, frame height and frames per second.

I'm really keen to get the original version EXACTLY the same (aside from no ads and straight to the action... )

    Help???

I've never seen videoredo do that - the output should be exactly the same format as the input, and the processing time should be a lot quicker than 30 minutes.

You do have the correct version of VideoReDo? (from http://videoredo.com/ )

Yeah, that's the one I got...

It's a bit frustrating to be honest! Any settings or issues anyone knows about that might be causing this?

I'm trying DVREdit, but it's just not as good... The interface is much harder to use, and it's less accurate.

Why oh why couldn't microsoft just allow input = output on movie maker???
