Re: Looking for testers for MCE video conversion assistant (MCEBuddy free GPL)

Thanks for this application, haven't tried it out yet but will.

I have used Crunchie for ages , but am investigating going to x264 for my video files.

One question is it possible to manually run the program and convert, I ask this because I use a different machine to convert videos than my MCE machine.

Question Re: Looking for testers for MCE video conversion assistant (MCEBuddy free GPL)

    Another stupid question alert.... but,

From what I am reading here and on your first link, you install this application, and it just uatomatically runs, at some time after you have recorded a TV show and converts it.

Can you turn it off? What if I just want to occasionally convert selected shows to XVID? That is to say, I don't want another background application just on.

Sorry about being just a little bit slow on the uptake.

Just stop the service from the tray icon and it won't run. It'll start again when you start the service again.

    Hey King,

I have had this running for about an hour now... It just installs as a service, after selecting your desired config you hit "start" and it just seems to begin converting all DVR-MS files in your recorded tv folder one at a time. If you hit "stop" and then "start" again it will pickup converting whichever file it was working on last... I'm assuming once it gets thru all the current DVR-MS files i have it will just sit waiting for the next recording to finish...

There does not seem to be any option to tell it which specific file to convert, however i for one vote this would be very handy, especially if it could be done say thru the "more info" option in VMC

Anyway i installed FFDshow and SA and am using it to convert to H.264 at the highest quality, the first file went from a 3.5GB DVR-MS to less then 400MB & removed all coms flawlessly

A great app so far, but the feature of selecting specific files only would just put a very sweet cherry on this already delicious cake

    Cheers
    Greg

I've fixed destination folder selection and provided source folder selection in release 1.0.1. It was already there but now there's a dialog box for it.

    Guys,
this is getting a little bigger than I expected. Should I post this in another section? If so where and how?

    Cheers

Re: Looking for testers for MCE video conversion assistant (MCEBuddy free GPL)

Looks brilliant. While a MCE plugin allowing you to select files to encode would be pretty handy, setting the number of days before it is encoded is a decent enough work around (I delete everything after it's watched and that's usually done within a couple of days).

One thing I would love to have added was the ability for the program to create a directory within the target directory depending on the name of the show.

i.e I encode the file directly into my f:\movies directory.

If for instance i encode "Thank God Your Here" it could create a directory (if it didn't already exist) under the f:\movies directory. The name is everything before the first underscore in the file name. That way it will automatically store subsequent files of the same show into the same directory.

Not sure how easy this would be to do, and it should probably be able to be turned off in the options, but it would be handy.

It is brilliantly easy though, thanks for the work you've put in.

Edit: You could probably put it in the Vista Plugins section even though it is not strictly a Vista plugin. I don't know how the admins will take cross posting in the MCE2005 plugins section (with just a link to the vista thread) but it would be an idea.

Yup, that's easy enough to get into the next release (directory creation). Any MCE plugin is harder as I'll have to find the time to learn the MCE SDK. All the existing stuff in MCEBuddy I already know how to do. So its a time thing.

    Cheers

    Hi phredeaux

Wow, what an excellent concept. Simplicity at it's best. Brilliant app.
I'd add rep points but theres no thanks button.
(It would be a good idea to move this thread to another area of the forum where thanks can be given. Because your efforts are well appreciated.)
    Thanks anyway.
    Bryce

    Things I experienced: Ver 1.01
    1. UAC was shut down during setup.

    2. Cannot use MCE Buddy Configuration When UAC is active.
The following error is generated.... Unable to control the MCEBuddy service
Cannot open MCE Buddy service on computer '.'.
Apart from that everything is O.K. Just turn UAC off to make changes to the configuration.

    Transcodes quickly and efficiently.

Yes, I turn off UAC as service control is disabled by UAC (so you can't start and stop the service) and you can't get around it without a lot of work (which I'll do sometime soon). Might put that on the web page somewhere.
