1920x1080 - 1080p Mythical Display from a PC
Hi there, I'm trying to discover whether the TEAC LCD4235A or Sony Bravia KDL40X2000
actually support a resolution of 1920x1080 from a PC.
JB HI-FI were kind enough to let me use one of their new HP notebooks with an NVIDIA graphics card and HDMI output to attach to both the machines, as well as a standard VGA adaptor. However, whilst both vendors claim to support 1920x1080 pixels, we could not get either monitor to display at this resolution. The best display resolution was 1366x768 on the Sony and around 1280x720 on the TEAC. The display settings did show that 1920x1080 was an option when the external monitors were plugged in.
Sony support have not been helpful at this point; they just said check with HP - it must be their problem, and that their monitor is 1080p. TEAC didn't know, but said it would take a week to get back with a real answer.
Has anyone setup a "real" 1080p setup from a PC, using 1920x1080 pixels?

I'm running 1920x1080 on my TV which is a 1080p panel the key is to not use the VGA connector as some TVs will not support a resolution that high using the VGA connector I have no idea why the manufacters do this. You will need to either connect it via HDMI or Component.
Case: Silverstone LC17, Motherboard: Intel DG865PERL, CPU:Pentium 4 2.4 GHz, RAM: 1x 512MB Kingmax,Power: Antec Phantom Fanless 350W HDD: 2 X WD 8M SATA 200GB 7200rpm,Tuners: Dvico Fusion DVB-T Plus and Dvico Fusion DVB-T Lite,Video Card: NVidia 6600 DP, DVD: Sony DVD +/- R Burner,Input: Microsoft MCE Keboard and Harmony 880 remote

JB Hi-Fi and Sony Support need a kick to the head...
I own a KDL46X2000, and the back of the manual, there is a list of allowed resolutions for the PC input. It is 1366 x 768, exactly what you discovered.
However, getting running at 1080p is dead easy (and I've mentioned this in another thread already).
Any decent graphics card with a DVI connection. (Mine is a 6600GT)
Cable from Dick Smith Electronics (DVI -> HDMI)
Latest NVidia Drivers (93.71)
You may need to connect to the "PC input" first so you can get to the settings.
When you enable the "Advanced" view in the NVidia Control Panel. There's a link about "Change the signal or HD format".
Once you click on that, there's an option to choose 1080p. Hit apply and there you go.
Oh, one more thing, you need to set the HDMI setup to "Full Pixel" via the menu system on the Sony display, otherwise you get overscan.
Enjoy

I concur with eaglehawk. Friend of mine has has the 40" new bravia X series and with a dvi -> hdmi cable it definitely does 1080p, setting full pixel mode for no overscan.

I have just connected my media center to the new 40" Samsung 1080p via VGA and it worked fine. It is running @75hz. Looks sweet!

Hey, thanks a lot for the information, it's all given me some hope! I'll revisit the 1080p settings on the NVidia settings.
I really think the manufacturers should state the limitations with their VGA adaptors (or at least a max) resolution.

Re: 1920x1080 - 1080p Mythical Display from a PC
thanks people for info in this thread - as I just bought a new full high def panel and could not get more than 1366 X 768 - I was going crazy trying everything - but yep if you use the old DVI to VGA cable then the monitor says to the PC that is my max resolution, and 1080p cannot be activated
solution: purchase a DVI to HDMI cable (purchased online $20 inc delivery) then magically all the extra modes are displayed for selection including the magic 1920 X 1080
now I just have to go the next step and grab a Bluray player but sounds like reading just now my hardware won't be up for it as BR is CPU hungry
I realise this is an old thread but still relevant as I think a lot of people are buying up Full HDs now

Are you sure these panels are FULL HD panels? Pretty sure you also need 780G or G35 chipsets to have blu ray play smoothly along with dual core CPU

Re: 1920x1080 - 1080p Mythical Display from a PC
I managed to pump out 1920x1080p at 72hz on my acer 3705 with the help of manually created resolutions with extensive changes to the front and back end porch. Would be great for blu ray playback. I did squeeze out 1920x1080p @ 75hz but was getting intermittant tearing. 1920x1080p @ 75hz gives a bandwidth of 164.2hz which is just shy of the HDMI max spec of 165hz throughput.
I managed these resolutions with a direct connection from PC to monitor. I've settled with 1920x1080 @50hz now I'm running through my amp's HDMI switching.
cheers,
