Samsung PS50A550 50" Plasma
this thread has 7 replies and has been viewed 1194 times
Just thinking about purchasing the Samsung 50" PS50A550 Plasma and was wondering if any here has any comments or thoughts on this model. Was going to order the 650 but put off with the red around the outer edge.
Should have seen the look on the salesman's face on the weekend when I told him that the picture on new Samsung 52A650 LCD was f#@king horrible! We were watching AFL on 7SD.
My crappy 2.5 year old plasma shows a better picture than what we saw, and my complaints about the plasma have been aired on these forums far too much!
Now looking at plasma options again, so I'd be keen to hear other peoples' opinions on the PS50A550 too.

Hi Luke.
Samsung don't have good 100Hz implementation.
My 46" Bravia XBR shows really smooth AFL images.
While I dont have this model (I have the previous model 50") I can comment on Samsung Plasmas in general.
I started with a 42" HD model about 4 years ago ($4400) - it hummed like a powerstation and after several repair attempts I got the ****s and demanded a replacement. They made me wait for the new 42" model - and it worked - for a while - then the picture started to go off after random amounts of viewing time.. So they repaired it again.. and again.. and again - then the panel itself died.. 6 weeks later (slow boat from singapore - no ****) the panel arrived and it was put in.
Then it died again! - this time it was out of warranty - but as the TV has been IN FOR REPAIR for a total of 6 months out of the TV's 2 year warranty I demanded that my warranty be extended for 6 months...
Soooo I got it REPLACED again.. this time i paid a bit more and they upgraded it to the 50" model that I have now. ($700 to upgrade)
It too has issues - when the show im watching has mostly white on the screen the power supply rattles like its going to burst its way out of the back of the set.. its only a matter of time before it dies - but at least I got a new 2 year warranty when I paid the extra to upgrade.
All this time I was treated like a piece of **** by samsung - I was without my TV for over 6 months during the initial 2 year warranty and they couldnt have cared one little bit.
Buyer beware!
Get the panasonic - they have the best picture and are priced great - I am bitterly dissapointed I didnt.

Do not be put off by the red around the 650. In practice it is so subtle as to be un-noticable. It may be horses for courses, but many have been worried about the red border only to find it has no effect on the TV in use. It is subtle and in my mind makes the TV look really good in the home environment. You cannot really compare how it looks under the store lights.
You don't have to believe this, but I have a 46" 650 and it looks great. Works like a charm as a computer monitor for media centre Vista.
Cheers,
King Hilary.
