Re: DVI-HDMI with analog sound (not working with Nvidia drivers)

Your sony thinks it is getting an audio signal from the HDMI cable most likely related to the Nvidia drivers. The Bravia then blocks off the analog audio.

I tried and tried and eventually got sound from the TV by mucking around with drivers (cant remember how but it was a workaround found on this forum)..... anyhow the sound was pretty poor so I reverted to simple PC stereo speakers next to the Bravia. This sounded remarkably (and surprisingly) good.

I ended up giving up and traded my Nvidia 8600 for a ATI Powercolor HD3450 (Ebay $70 delivered).

The HD3450 has been great now for months......I now have good audio from the Bravia via HDMI...... but not any better than the stereo PC speakers.

    Good luck

There's a way you can configure the NVidia driver (prior to installing it) to override/ignore that it 'discovers' an HDMI connection, and thus NOT send digital audio through the DVI connector (obviously requires that you can and DO use an external analog audio cable). This solves the problem for those of us with HDTV's that auto-sense HDMI/analog audio (mine's an Olevia 237T) and have nVidia graphics (mine's a 7100/630i motherboard w/integrated graphics). I found this originally at http://forums.nvidia.com/index.php?s...=&#entry330319 - although it was being used for a different purpose - but I can certainly vouch that it works!

Here are the steps in full (rewritten by me)... You need to have your PC hooked up to your TV, so the EDID discoverer can get your display's ID code:

    1. Get Phoenix EDID Designer, (http://www.tucows.com/preview/329441), unzip and run the exe (no install reqd)
    2. Click Tools->Extract registry EDID, then double click the line for your TV/monitor in the popup
    3. Click Tools->Byte viewer, and note down the values in row 00, columns 08-0B (4 bytes)
    4. Start the installation of the latest Nvidia drivers and cancel out once the files are extracted
    6. Open the file "nv_disp.inf" in a text editor. By default for the current drivers this is in C:\NVIDIA\...\169.21
    7. Scroll down to the section [nv_SoftwareDeviceSettings], add the following line there, replacing the "XX" values below with the 4 values noted in step 3:

    HKR,, OverrideEdidFlags0, %REG_BINARY%, XX,XX,XX,XX,00,00,FF,FF,04,00,00,00,7E,01,00

(In my case the TV code was SYN 0043, the four values being: 4F,2E,43,00 )

    4. Uninstall your current drivers and reboot
    5. Install the modified drivers by running the previously extracted setup.exe. By default for the current drivers, this is in C:\NVIDIA\...\169.21. You'll get a warning about the driver not being signed because of the modified inf. Just press OK.

Reboot, and you should have GLORIOUS AUDIO!!!
    Fantastic... I thought... A fix..

    Applied the fix, worked perfectly...

Then, realised all my Refresh rates were gone (which I had before the above fix), and I only have 60Hz instead of 50Hz and 24Hz. I tried to create a custom 50hz 1920X1080 but it wouldnt accept it.

Just as a test, I have uninstalled the fix and installed the standard drivers, but now that wont show the refresh rates I had (and worked) before.

So, has anyone else had this issue and solved it?

    Thanks,
    Robert

Re: DVI-HDMI with analog sound (not working with Nvidia drivers)

Sorry to bring up an old thread. I just spent a few hours trying to get analogue working on my Nvidia card. Nvidia has released a tool for Vista that disables the digital sound in the registry.

    http://forums.nvidia.com/index.php?s...dpost&p=508064

    Worked for me.

    Hope it helps someone.

Any updates with XP and the latest drivers?

I have tried the hack and works OK but after updated to the latest drivers stopped working again and no luck even roll back to the 162 or 182 drivers.

Try the latest Nvidia driver(191.0x). You can disable the audio for HDMI(under Display->Change resolution->Connector use Audio Disabled) and force TV to use analog audio in . Finally Nvidia had solved the problem.

Thanks for the information but just tried it on series 8 card and found that still doesn't work.

Still need to use the DLPfix.exe on WIN7.

Tried it on 191.07 and 195.39, there's no such option (at least not in XP).

This is what you have to do:

    1. Use the cable to connect the SPDIF-IN on the video card to the SPDIF-OUT on the Mobo.
    2. Go to Control Panel, "Hardware and Sound", "Manage Audio Devices" and select the SPDIF device as the default playback device.
    3. Connect your card to the TV using a DVI-HDMI cable. You dont need the analog sound cable, only the DVI-HDMI cable.
I'm trying to make this work as well, but to no avail so far Where exactly do I set the SPDIF device and how is it called? Also, would setting it disable my other analog audio ports?
    Cheers

Re: DVI-HDMI with analog sound (not working with Nvidia drivers)

    Hello xyorkie,

You might need to go back into media centre setup and specifically tell your computer that it now needs to output the sound via the HDMI cable. You might need to do this in your general sound output setup outside of media centre as well.

have you tested the HDMI input on your TV with some other device? I had one faulty HDMI input on my samsung, and it took a while for this to get sorted, (fortunately under warranty). This input was fine for picture but just would not play the sound.

    I hope that this helps.

    King Hilary.
