Harmony 880 Charging Cradle Issue

I have a Harmony 880 which I have had for over 12 months but I am having issues with the charging cradle in the fact that when I sit the Harmony on it to recharge it just doesn't seem to sit properly for it to charge.

I had heard that this was an issue with the Harmony and I am wondering if anyone has found a way to fix this?

It makes the Harmony very annoying because I just can't seem to get a decent charge int it now compared to when I first got it.

I am considering getting a 525 for the bedroom but I am also thinking that I may now have to replace the 880 with one as well.

Re: Harmony 880 Charging Cradle Issue

This issue has been discussed before on the site. If you do a few searches around you will find it.

As a fellow 880 owner I do recall some of the issues. Some people have contacted the manufacturer and got new cradles. There was some discussion about the issue being design based, so a new charger was not always the answer. There were also some other actions taken by people to slightly modify their charger to get a better connection.

Personally my charger connection is getting a bit dodgy and I am planning to use the method I read here one time about placing a little solder on the contacts to make them get a better connection.

Best of luck.

Re: Harmony 880 Charging Cradle Issue

Basically you need to clean the connections on both the base and the remote, which is a little tricky. You will find yourself doing this every couple of months..

Re: Harmony 880 Charging Cradle Issue

Yes I was one of those who received a replacement charging cradle from Logitech. According to them some of the original ones were faulty but I'm more inclined to think it's a design issue. Perhaps they did slightly modify the design since mine hasn't given me any issues since but frankly I can't see what has changed. More to the point, the LCD screen on mine is starting to fade and become quite hard to read and that really is annoying for such an expensive remote. I also have a Harmony One which so far I can highly recommend if you decided on a replacement.

Re: Harmony 880 Charging Cradle Issue

I came up with the solder blobs fix. It worked for ages, but then gradually became dodgy again. I ended up opening the cradle & bending up the leaf springs of the charging points so thay they sat up higher, but I had to file out the holes in the black plastic that they stick up through to get some more height.

The result was that it made good contact for charging, but the remote wouldn't sit well to keep charging. I now use a red rubber band over the cradle & the top of the remote to pin it down - sounds inconvenient, but works well.

I actually found your thread about it and was considering doing that. Not sure which is the best way to go now then.

Re: Harmony 880 Charging Cradle Issue

I use a dremel to sand the contacts on both the base and remote. I have done it twice so far and need to do it again soon...

My 880 was fine for about a year and behaved itself for about six months after the sanding...

Re: Harmony 880 Charging Cradle Issue

I found cleaning both contacts off every now and then with a finger nail usually kept it going for a couple of weeks. I have a "one" now which charges flawlessly. It seems to have another issue. The motion sensor doesnt work as well as the 880. It sometimes doesnt turn the screen off and it runs itself flat after a day or so, when left out of the cradle.
