<img src="http://www.xpmediacentre.com.au/images/uploads/orbLogo_02.jpg" border="0" align="right" hspace="5", vspace="5" width="118" height="94" /> Orb Networks has launched a service that allows Internet-connected mobile devices to access media collections located on remote Windows Media Center PCs. Orb Media 1.0 provides "spontaneous access" to music, live television, videos, photos, and other digital media from cell phones, PDAs, and other mobile devices, the company says.
According to Orb Networks, the subscription-based service is based on a "robust and scalable" Orb Architecture that determines the best format, codec, bit rate, display capabilities, and network bandwidth available for a particular cell phone, PDA or laptop to view or hear the selected content. The media is streamed securely and directly from a broadband-connected home PC to the mobile device.
The service uses a web browser on the mobile device to establish a connection to the user's "personal media portal," and, from there, to the home PC running Windows XP Media Center Edition. Subscriptions start at $10USD per month, or $80USD per year, for the first user.
The Orb Media software is available as a free download from the company's website -
www.orb.com and they are offering the first 60 days access to the Orb server at no charge - see the demo
