Well those of us who have Windows Mobile based phones will know well the shortcomings of these converged devices. It is likely here that the shortcomings are mostly related to the underlying OS and it's loose integration with the available hardware. Personally I believe Apple's entry into the market is a huge win for consumers. I'll admit the size of it despite how thin it is might be a significant hurdle for me but if Apple deliver a stable device with all the touted functionality I'll be taking a much closer look. One of the big attractions for me is the way Apple have added significant improvements to touchscreen functionality and I'm really looking forward to giving it a try.
I'm interested to know what others make of Apples Quantum shift in directionand its entry into this market. Personally I think the mobile carriers will be quivering with fear or clamouring to get in on the act.
Yes and the touchscreen implementation is awesome. If you saw it demonstrated on TV last night you would have just about fallen off your chair like I did. The way it reads actions for scrolling and zooming is a major enhancement. I have to say though that I have a Treo600 sitting in a drawer somewhere because it was too big so while this thing is thin I will need some convincing that it won't be too big. I want a phone I can put in the pocket of my jeans like the O2 Atom. Much bigger than that and I need to buy a belt attached pouch which doesn't thrill me much.
I have an O2 atom. All I will say is that assuming it works how they say I will immediately upgrade to the apple iphone. Maybe the new classifieds section will get a workout.

ROFL. Yes I'm not convinced there's anything out there at the moment that's any more reliable of fully featured than the atom but the key for me is reliability and usability. If Apple can better the M$ model especially on reliability I suspect people will be breaking down their doors to get one.
