Hauppauge Remote - IR Blaster

I know the Microsoft Media Centre Remote has the IR blaster necessary for Foxtel/Austar, but does this Hauppauge one have it? I think I remember someone saying a Hauppauge remote did - but is it this one?
Thanks.

Re: Hauppauge Remote - IR Blaster

Geez I dunno, had to take the plastic off the box to check for you

Short answer = YES

Box contains, remote, receiver, detatchable USB cable, 2 x AA and .... wait for it ..... an IR transmitter on the end of a cable with a 3.5mm male plug.

Hope that is what you need.

Re: Hauppauge Remote - IR Blaster

The only thing I want to know, is does the Hauppauge remote/receiver do Triple Tap?

Re: Hauppauge Remote - IR Blaster

Triple tap = using the number pad for alpha enty (like you do with SMS).

Can someone actually plug one in & tell us what comes up in device manager? I want to know if it essentially installs the same (therefore is the same) as the MS remote. Also, trying a Harmony remote with one would be good too.

Re: Hauppauge Remote - IR Blaster

OK plugged in the one for my mate onto my test MCE, the report is .....
  • The driver is the standard Windows eHome Infrared Transceiver device. ie exactly the same as the real McCoy
  • Just plug it in and it works
  • The remotes are interchangeable, ie can use Hauppauge on an M$ IR and vice versa
  • The remote is a little "lighter weight", a little flimsy perhaps
  • Remote has a fairly good feel
  • The buttons on the remote are smaller, ie volume, channel, play
  • The direction and "OK" buttons don't have the sunken middle "feel"
  • Don't know about programming volume and TV control - will try later
  • No words on the remote for "Recorded TV", "Guide", etc only pictures on the buttons - not sure how long until they wear off
  • A few buttons in slightly differnt locations, ie stop / pause transposed, what looks like the TV button down the botton not top left
  • No "Teletext" button - but then I never knew what that was for anyway!
  • Still don't get the "tripple tap" thing. Pressed a number 3 times, just does what the old remote did, ie cycle through the letters by that number
  • The IR receiver is much smaller than the M$ one - good
  • The IR receiver has a mini USB connection and uses a standard mini - full USB cable
  • IR receiver case has no screws, so mounting inside a case is probably a hammer job (will find out soon )
  • Interestingly the Hauppauge remote has the same patent # on the back as the M$

Overall - Prefer the M$, but no longer around so I will be buying one for my next MCE due in a couple of months (or when I get a job! )

Re: Hauppauge Remote - IR Blaster

Update .....

Seems like no programmable buttons. Certainly doesn't enter learning mode like the M$ remote and appears to have no IR receiver.

So I wonder what the "T" button down the bottom of it is supposed to do?

That's triple-tap - so that's a yes. Good, that means I can pick one of these up and use my Harmony 880. No other remote receiver has been able to do that.

Don't really care about the quality of the remote, just want the receiver.

Thumbs up Re: Hauppauge Remote - IR Blaster

So not a perfect replacement, but pretty darn close. Essentially the same receiver hardware by the looks of it, so that's good. Will be spot on with Harmony remotes then.

Thanks DDH, you've been repped.
